LEARN TO SEW

Learn to Sew

Hello everyone!  Are you ready to Learn to Sew?  The Beginner’s Sewing Course is now in session!  Before beginning the Course, check out the first two videos where I give you a description of the items you will need for your stater kit.

PDF Shopping List

Here is a printable Sewing Kit Shopping List.  The items on the list may be purchased at your local fabric store or online.

Class Schedule

Once a week (6-weeks) I will post a new video, teaching the steps to construct the garment that we will be working on.  You may watch and sew along at your leisure.  This course is geared toward the person who doesn’t know how to sew, so I will be working at a slow pace.  If you already know how to sew and are here for a refresher, please keep in mind that this will be a slow paced course.  For those of you who are beginners, I will teach you the basics that you will need to start your sewing journey.  After you learn the basics, you will be able to further your training by watching other tutorials and reading sewing books.  Once this course is complete, I will begin creating tutorials of some of the garments I’ll be making.

If you are viewing the videos from a mobile device, you may not be able to see the text overlays included on the video.  I apologize for that.

Thanks for stopping by!

Remember: When you live in your DESIGN, it is from there that God SHINES!

    Hi Anita,

I already sew but I am not an expert. I am already a teacher (and maybe pretty good at that), but teaching sewing, because I still need to learn is a bit of challenge. My daughter asked for a sewing machine and she asked me to show her how to sew, so I already picked up a machine for her and we are doing your course together beginning on Easter weekend (she is home for a short visit, then leaving the province with her machine on Monday) so I looked through your course and thought it would be a great way for her to learn to sew (you break it down so nicely…I like your teaching style). My plan is for my daughter and I to do the circle skirt together that weekend and she can do the rest of your course on her own time once she is familiar with her machine and the basics. So, having a look at your course, I was skipping along, and thought, gee, I could make myself a t-shirt this week because I have a some knit material here, and I would really like to learn how to do it properly. But I can’t get the first video on the t-shirt lessons to work. It brings up an error message. Is there a way to access it? Thanks so much. I can’t wait to get started!

Thank you so much! I had been praying to God to line up an opportunity for learning to sew garments. I wasn’t even looking and was drawn to Anita By Design. I watched the first two videos completely before doing anything and already have learned so much. Yesterday, I purchased the pattern and supplies. While at the fabric shop I guided another to your website. Anita you are amazingly talented and inspiring. Not to mention an excellent teacher. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing your God given talent with a generous heart. Off to prepare my fabric I go. Very greatful to have found you.

Hi Erica! Thank you so much for following. I stayed home with my kids too and loved every minute of it. I cherish those days and memories made with my boys.

There are soooo many sewing books on the market to choose from. The two that I’ve had from the beginning of my journey I call my textbooks. They are both filled with loads of detail and instruction. Here they are:

      1) Simplicity’s: Simply The Best Sewing Book http://www.thriftbooks.com/w/simplicitys-simply-the-best-sewing-book_simplicity-pattern-company/382578/?gclid=CjwKEAiAkuLDBRCRguCgvITww0YSJAAHrpf-L_eYDehlMemoqvJ8wRVSk0TMWv4t7tBDtQj62C9qKBoC2RPw_wcB#isbn=006055049X&pcrid=70112893872&pkw=&pmt=&plc=
      2) The Vogue/Butterick Step-by-Step Guide to Sewing Techniques https://www.amazon.com/Vogue-Butterick-Step-Sewing-Techniques/dp/1936096277/ref=pd_sbs_14_img_0?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=BFM93QDK4Z6AZ6Y7THYG

      Other great resources:
      3) Pattern Fitting with Confidence https://www.amazon.com/Pattern-Fitting-Confidence-Nancy-Zieman/dp/0896895742/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1484349465&sr=1-1&keywords=pattern+fitting+with+confidence+by+nancy+zieman
      4) Fabric Savvy https://www.amazon.com/More-Fabric-Savvy-Resource-Selecting/dp/1561586625/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1484349591&sr=1-1&keywords=more+fabric+savvy

These are just a few good ones I recommend for beginners. There are many more. Just go to amazon and type whatever you want to learn, and the resources will pop up.

      Hope this helps.

Hi Tania! Oh how sorry I am that I missed your message back in October. I really try to respond to all questions. This one slipped through somehow. I hope you were able to figure it out. I inserted a text overlay, explaining that step because it got left out of the recording. If you were viewing from your a mobile device you wouldn’t be able to see it, only from a desktop. I apologize for that. In the future, if you ever encounter a missing step (which I hope will not happen again) just look at the pattern instruction sheet to see what was missing from the video. Hope this helps. Have a great day!

Hello Anita! Wow! You are heaven sent as well as a beautiful lady. I am sooo fortunate to have found you after 25 years. This is how long I’ve been a newbie in sewing. That’s right, I’ve been a newbie for 25 years. Let me explain… I’ve always wanted to sew after I had taken a quick home economics class in school. I’ve learned nothing and the teacher did everything. But I’ve love the concept of making something, (even if it was just a 5 x 5 stuffed pillow). For years I asked around if anyone knew how to sew, and I couldn’t find anyone who did. I continued to make my desire known to family and friends, then soon after that I received a sewing machine as a gift. Now that I have a machine, this is when my 25 year journey begun. Afraid of the machine, I never opened it. Instead I’ve looked for sewing classes to get help to use it. But back in the day, sewing classes was very very expensive, as well as going to college to learn. As time went on I’ve tried to get it going. I’ve read the machine’s instructions, went to the library read and brought sewing books. Everything sounded foreign to me. This year I’ve paid $65.00 for 6 Monday’s in a community college. When I took my machine for a tune up, I was told it was not worth it. So I purchased a new one or class, In class, I wasn’t explained how to read a pattern the way you’ve explained it. So I purchased the wrong pattern (ready to wear). It was too small. I didn’t pretreat my fabric, and the teacher cut 2 extra inches from the pattern. I sewed most of my project without a seam allowance. After 6 weeks, my project wasn’t finished. So now here I am following you. This is the first time in years that I am confident in sewing. Thank you.
I know that I am waaay behind in your classes. I just really need your help in something. My waist is 40″ but the Butterick pattern only goes up to a 20. Do you have an alternate patterns for plus sizes over 20?
Thank for allowing me to vent.

I’m so very blessed to have found you. I have watched so many videos for ‘beginning’ sewers but they do not go into the detail that you do. They take for granted that we have some background whereas you assume nothing. I have some knowledge but was never able to complete anything beyond a skirt with an elastic waistband. My dear mother was a designer and seamstress extrodinaire as was my dad. He taught at FIT in Manhattan. She was a perfectionist. When she matched plaids or stripes, you couldn’t tell where the seam was. She wanted so much for me to learn to sew but had no patience with my mistakes. Instead of showing me what to do, she did it for me. As a result, I gave up. Now at age 70, I’m on fire with the desire to learn to sew properly and your videos are the best ever. Right now, I’m watching all of them and when I complete viewing them, I’ll get started. I’m eagerly anticipating your Intermediate videos but one step at a time for me. Thank you for sharing your God given gift with others. You are a true blessing.

    Hi,
I am so blessed to have found your video today. I prayed to God that he teach me to sew, and he said what seems impossible to man, is possible with God. I have watched your first two videos, and maybe a little bit behind, but I’m blessed to have found YOU. Praise God. You explain things like you are actually talking to me (which you are), and I appreciate that because I don’t know much, but so far I will give myself an A++. ANYTHING! I just smiled so bright, because I felt something while reading your feedback. I was seeking advice from an elder lady at church, she is 72. I asked her how can God use me in sewing because I’m a 24 year old new body in Christ. She tried telling me about the Dorcas ministry. But I still didn’t quite get it (Jesus & sewing); because I thought “well how can this -sewing/fashion- be MY will from God? And how will I bring people to the cross by sewing?” While I see some ways, I’m still thinking. His ways will sure manifest itself to me. I have Faith that my interest, interest him as well. Maybe you can give me a few examples. Oh and the name on my birth certificate is Anika, so nice meeting you Anita. God sure have His ways on making us smile or feel connected.

Oooooh Kimmie, my sister, your last comment made me smile even bigger. I asked God that same question when I was contemplating whether or not to start this blog. He gave me so many confirmations to move ahead, so here I am. The most important part of moving into something new is doing exactly what you have done. You’ve asked how can God use you? Oh, how delighted He is when His children seek Him first. When He allows us to serve His people He wants the glory for it. After we have heard from Him and move forward, He will take care of the details. All we have to do is be ourselves and pay attention. He will send people to us, and present opportunities for ministry. That’s exactly what I’m experiencing already. This blog is about more than sewing. It is my passion to encourage women. If I can do that with my sewing, while pointing them to Jesus, then my purpose here is being manifested. All glory to Him! I’m so happy to have met you! Have a beautiful evening!

OMGosh! Yes, Jesus is so amazing! I mentor a group of young ladies also. I started as their Sunday School teacher, when they were in preschool, and followed them through 6th grade, then handed them off to the Youth Ministry Leaders. One year later, I started a Girls Club, and reconnected with my girls and several others from different churches in my area. We’ve met once a month (or more) for Bible studies, community service events, and girl time. They all just graduated from high school last month and are going off in different directions. God used them to enhance my life. When I look back over the years and how He has blossomed these girls into young ladies, all I can do is smile. Their parents have raised them with God’s direction, and trusted me to walk along them as mentor. You will be blessed beyond measure in your ministry to young girls. God bless you always.

Hey Sis this is awesome that you are doing this for those who don’t know how to sew or want a refresher course! I was recently contacted about doing the same thing and unfortunately due to what I already have on my plate I have to decline. LOLL However I am referring others to your blog telling them how wonderful you are and how much I believe they can learn from you! So stay on the look out for more students I truly believe this is a great place for them to be!

Hey Shari! I consider it a GREAT compliment that you feel confident in referring newbies to learn how to sew with me. I am truly honored and appreciate your support. I totally understand you not wanting to add more to your plate. I have to be careful myself as I continue on this journey not to allow myself to become unbalanced. In the busy times it’s so easy to get priorities twisted. Thank you again, and I’m anxiously, but patiently, awaiting the debut of your Nina Ramel Collection.

Hello Anita, I am so glad to know about your class. I am blessed that it is free of charge. I am in Mimi G class and I may have to drop out due to my schedule. I can not afford to miss out and still pay. I really love your modest look and meek demeanor. I can tell you love to sew and teach. You seem humble. Thank you again.

Hey Anita…found my way here!! So I’m so thrilled about the upcoming sewing class!! Let me tell you how great it is after looking around…it’s exciting to see a fellow sister of Christ! Too many people today are more about being politically correct when it comes to blogs and whatnot. I love you aren’t ashamed of telling the world about your faith in our savior. Ok, now onto my reason for the contest. My husband is a dead working provider! We have two beautiful boys Angelo 8 and Isaac 4. I’ve been blessed to be a stay at home mom, and now that our youngest is going to be starting school soon I would like to start something I enjoy and possibly maybe make some money to help contribute. I kind of feel like I’ve spent so much time concentrating on raising the boys and homemaking I’ve forgotten to allow my interest to be validated…not that I don’t love raising my kids and being a homemaker! We don’t have very much “extra” money, but we are debt free, bills paid, and have food on the table. In short, GOD has taken great care of us! My hubby did buy me a sewing machine for Christmas, but he had no idea you can’t just start making things without some other purchases along with it 😃 which is why I’m entering your contest. So there’s my story in a nutshell. Thank you for taking the time to do this. I’m looking forward to following your youtube series and blog! God bless you and have a great day/evening.

Anita, I’m very excited to be going through this course! I learned to sew in high school almost 45 years ago and used to make a lot of my own clothes. But after a while I would become so frustrated if the garment didn’t fit just right and I’d give up. Then came the kid-rearing years so I gave up sewing for a time, but now I’m ready to get back to it, just for fun, just for me.

The book you mentioned about customizing patterns sounds great and I will definitely get it. I already have almost all the items in the kit, so please don’t enter me in the drawing. It’ll be exciting to see who’ll win it, though! Thanks for the tip to have machine serviced. I didn’t even think of that.

Hello Anita. When I was in high school 40 years ago ( yes I said it right) I took sewing. A lot of things I forgot. As I life. We forget. The big 4 designs the patterns like we know everything they are explaining. I’m taking the class because a lot of things I forget. Sometimes when I sew things I get so angry because the directions I just don’t understand. I have to walk away from things and come back a hour later. I have to have someone read it to me. By any means necessary. And then what happens next is I pull the pins out and throw it in the trash. But your voice is anointing so I can easy learn and take heed. I am not concerned or care to be entered in the drawing. I have all that. I would rather someone who is learning to win or someone who may have to pay a light bill but wishes in their heart that they could buy it to win. Sewing is a very expensive hobby. As soon as you learn a technique they make something new and I run out to buy it because I just have to have it. I am also a pattern junkies. I will buy a new pattern at the drop of a hat. Now I haven’t even attempted to make the item but I just had to have that pattern. I never thought one day that I would be a fabric hoarder but I am because I can. You have made me proud. I will walk with you through your journey because I need some understanding sometimes. So I have tied my shoes and I am ready for the walk.

Hi Anita, I am so excited about your upcoming sewing classes. I have been looking for local sewing classes but haven’t been able to find one. I have wanted to learn to sew for years, but have this fear of making a mistake. I don’t just want to sew garments, but I want my garments to look flawless. I know this will take time, but my goal is to be able to put together garments that do not look homemade. When I go to stores to shop whether high end, mid-range stores or whatever, I find outfits however, I have problems with the fabric choice, the color of the fabric, they type of fabric used. I, also, don’t like it when I walk into the office and there is someone wearing my outfit. Seriously, I feel learning to sew will give me the opportunity to be uniquely ME! I have spent most of my adult life as a divorced, single parent, now my kids are grown and I want to focus on me and I think becoming creative with my clothing will be one way to discover who I am. I am on a weight loss journey, because raising two children alone left no time to think about me. As, I drop the weight, I want to be able to keep my style fresh. I plan to donate the clothing I can no longer fit to a women’s shelter, so they have to be fabulous. I have many pounds to lose, but I can and will do it. Thank you again for these classes. I will be subscribing to your channel so I can be on point and follow this program for as long as you offer it.

You are much appreciated. Thank you.
