Cowl Neck Dress – McCall’s 7471

Cowl Neck Dress - McCall's 7471

Hello everyone! Well I’ve dashed into my second year of blogging and I’m off to a good start.  If you read my 1-Year Blog Anniversary Post last week, then you learned that I need improvement in the area of time management with the blog.  So, I purchased a planner to help me become more efficient with my time and I must say that I’m loving this so far.  I had not heard of this particular planner until Mimi G shared a picture of hers last week.  Then after googling to see what it was all about, I decided to give it a try.  Whoever thought of this is so clever.  Not only are people buying their planners, but the company also sells cute little stickers and accessories that you can buy to use with the planner throughout the year.  If you’re looking for a new planner, check them out.  I’ve posted a link below (no affiliation).

Cowl Neck Dress – McCall’s 7471

For today’s DIY, I’m showcasing this cute little dress that I made using McCall’s 7471, which is actually a pattern for pullover tops and a tunic.  The combination of the cowl neck and dolman sleeves is what drew my attention to this pattern.  I extended the length on the tunic to make a dress and I love the outcome.  I will probably make a top and tunic from this pattern in the future.

Cowl Neck Dress - McCall's 7471I used fabric from my stash — another Michael Levine Loft pick.  It’s a thin, very stretchy knit.  The color is EVERYTHING!  I look best in bold colors and this one complements my skin tone so well.

I’m participating in a “Stash Buster Month” with some of my sew sisters at “Sew Much Talent.”  It’s a Facebook page created by Alethia Hudson.  I’m new to the group and so excited to be among such talented seamstresses.  Every month they have a different challenge for the members to participate in.  For the month of January, our challenge is to sew using only fabric from our stash–that means NO SHOPPING for fabric.  We were given a schedule of the types of garments to sew each week.

  • Week 1 = Tops/Dresses
  • Week 2 = Skirts/Pants
  • Week 3 = Handbags/Hats
  • Week 4 = Outerwear

Unfortunately, I didn’t keep up.  I only posted 2 dresses to the album, and here I am with another dress.  I plan to do better with next month’s challenge, which is to make workout gear.  Surely I can make one workout outfit in the month of February.  If you’d like to be part of the “Sew Much Talent” Facebook Group, click HERE to join.

This dress looks great. I bought this pattern and made it several months ago and got stuck on the cowl neck. The directions are confusing starting at #3 under Top B C & D. You have great pictures posted here and was hoping by studying the neck in your pictures I would be able to figure it out. Did you add a seam to the back of the neck? Would you be able to do a tutorial on the neck?

Hi Marilyn! No, I didn’t add a seam at the back neck. I followed the pattern instruction sheet without any changes. I probably won’t be doing a tutorial on this one though.

I love the dress and the fit on you. Compliments you very well. Oh I have the same exact happy planner Mimi has which is the 18 month one. I always change out their disc. If you want to do that and add pages like, to do pages and pocket dividers, you can find them at Office Depot.

Hi Camille! You had me laughing as I read your comment. I definitely wear foundation garments with scuba knit. I made a scuba knit pants suit and I tried the pants without the foundation garment. NO! It showed every crease and dimple. Now, if you’re tight and smooth, you may be able to go without the foundation garments.

This is beautiful! You really inspire me Anita. I promised myself I would make at least one garment each month, it’s almost the end of January and I haven’t even started. But when I saw this post, it encouraged me to put some time aside and make something. I’ll share it with you once I do!
