DIY Denim Overalls – Burda 6599

Happy Wednesday everyone!  Aaaahhhh!  I sewed something!  I sewed something!  This is the first time I’ve sewn anything since July.  I can tell you right now that THIS is what I need while caring for my husband.  Sewing takes me away to another place. It allows me to explore, to learn, to experiment, and to do something just for me. I set up my two new Baby Lock machines on the kitchen table so that I can be next to my husband while I sew. It took a lot longer to complete this project because I have to tend to Cecil’s needs during the day, when I sew. No night sewing for me right now, because I need to get my rest, as I’m pretty exhausted by 9:00 pm.

DIY Denim Overalls - Burda 6599Now that I have my new (temporary) sewing space, I’m ready to sew everyday (unfortunately, I haven’t been able to sew everyday yet). I had so much fun making my overalls.  I’ve had this pattern for the longest time and now that the weather has turned cold, I’m in need of warm, comfortable clothing, I thought it was the perfect time to pull this one out and get to work on it.  Also, I wanted to take my Baby Locks for their first drive using a denim fabric. The machines are a dream and I’m so excited to learn more about the features so that I can share with you. What I love most about my Soprano so far is the perfect stitching. Oh gosh, I haven’t had a machine that puts out more beautiful stitches. My topstitching came out so great with this machine. Oh brother, I think my sewing game is about to rise up a few notches. The threading mechanism of the Evolution is giving me all kinds of excitement. Changing thread colors is no longer a dreaded task. WooHoo!

While CEMO is resting and being healed, I have to learn to take my own photos. On photo shoot day, I set up the camera near our front door and just played around with the settings until I got something that looked fairly decent.  So bear with me while I experiment.  I’ll be hitting up YouTube to learn how to use the camera. I have a couple of friends who have offered to help me with photos since CEMO isn’t available. I’ll take them up on their offers eventually, but I wanted to get these done right away so that I could share them in today’s post. I really want to learn how to use the camera anyway. I’ll have to start recording my own videos soon, so I’ll need to learn that too.

This Burda Young pattern isn’t difficult to sew, however, there are techniques that require experience. Therefore, I would rate Burda 6599 as Intermediate. Advanced Beginners may be able to complete it with careful attention to details.

I’m happy with the fit. I originally wanted a baggy look, then changed my mind and went for fitted. According to the finished measurements printed on the pattern tissue, my cutting size for this pattern is 16. Well, I knew that would be too big, just from experience, so I went down two sizes.

Hi Anita, I am just about ready to cut into these overalls and make a mockup but the sizing has me second guess. You said the pattern ran about two sizes too large in the blog, did you happen to do any grading? I am concerned about cutting into a pattern that cannot be easily replaced if cut wrong.

    1. Anita Morris

Hi Jennifer! Oh my! It’s been a while since I’ve sewn the overalls and I don’t remember if I did any grading. Maybe you can trace the pattern onto tracing paper just to be safe.

  2. Carrey

Hi Anita- I want to make this for my daughter (she’s 30) for her birthday…do you take size 12 in the store?…I can’t decide what size to make as the measurements seem awfully small (according to measurements I think she’d be a 16 but in the store she takes a 10 pant

    1. Anita Morris

Hi Carrey! Oh my, it’s been a long time since I made these so I don’t remember. It’s best to get here measurements because ready-to-wear sizes don’t coincide with sewing pattern sizes. I don’t know what size I was back then because I wasn’t shopping in stores for clothes. Your best bet is to get her measurements.

  3. MICHELLE TULEY

Anita, do you have a video on youtube for this pattern? (DIY DENIM OVERALLS – BURDA 6599) I am making them for my daughter and need a visual 🙂 thank you!

  4. Kathryn Kastner

These overalls are fantastic. They are very professionally completed. I am really still an advanced beginner but one day hopefully I’ll be able to sew something I can really be proud of.

  5. Elizabeth

Oh my days! Your overalls are perfect! I’m getting back into sewing after years of neglect, and I just bought this pattern today for one of my next projects. After seeing your result, I’m inspired to get to work. Nicely done!

  6. Jacqueline

    Greetings!

Is there a pattern for an overall dress? Or can I use this same pattern to make the dress form?

  24. Pam

So good to see you back. The jeans are gorgeous, as are you! I was caregiver for both my parents in 2015, and sewing was what kept me sane and calm. Even if I could only stitch one seam in a day – it was still my mental retreat. I will continue to pray for your hubby’s healing and for your strength.

    1. Anita Morris

Thanks Pam, and yes, it will help to keep me sane and calm too.

  25. Florence

You look fabulous as always and you did a wonderful job on your photo shoot. I had the opportunity to use the Triumph at a local shop and it is something! It was my first time using a serger and that air threading definitely spoiled me. My husband just gifted me with a Juki serger(manual threading) and said when I put in more sewing mileage, upgrading may be an option, lol! I’m am still grateful for the gift. Remember to take care of Anita also and know that we are keeping you and your family in prayer.

    1. Anita Morris

Thanks Florence. Congratulations on your new Juki! Yes, I’m taking care of me now and my friends are making sure of it.

  43. Paulette dowdie

    CUTE!!!!! Love it!!

  44. Carrie Cooper

At first when I saw “overalls” I was a little skeptical of what this would look like. But oh so cute! Fitted was the way to go. And THANK YOU for the sizing info. I’m getting back into sewing and I wear a 12 but by the measurement charts, I need a 22 pattern. I’ve historically bought a pattern 2 sizes up from what I wear but until I test a few patterns I’ve no idea what will work. Your comments make me feel that I’ll probably end up in the 16 range.

  45. Sheila

So glad to see you back sewing again. You did an awesome job my sister. I still have you and your husband in my prayers.

  46. Deirdre aka MonaRae

Beautiful work! Your top stitching game is on POINT!

Glad to hear you are going to post how you did your own pictures. I am lacking in that area and need all the help I can get.

    1. Anita Morris

Thanks Deirdre! Actually I said I’m going to learn how to take my own photos. But hey, maybe I will share how I did it once I learn, because if you and I need to learn, I’m pretty sure there are others out there too needing the knowledge.

  47. Beverly

I am so happy and appreciative of all your blog post. As always your sewing technique is excellent. Your such an inspiration to the sewing community. These overalls are stunning, as is the beautiful lady wearing them! You continue to impress me, and you and Cemo are in my prayers! Sunday in our Bible class, we were studying some of the Psalms; what an inspiration they are to me in my daily walk and I know you take great delight in the scriptures, too.

    1. Anita Morris

  55. Pat

    Very nice!

  56. Erica Bunker

So cute! I’ll be making overalls this month too! Sewing is indeed the greatest escapism and part of your self-care. I take a lot of my own pictures when my husband is at work. A tripod, a camera remote (set the camera to the 10 second timer), and shoot in AUTO (point and shoot mode). And I just take pics on my deck because I like natural light. You can do it!

    1. Anita Morris

Ericaaaaaaa!!! Thank you so much sister! Yes, I used the tripod and timer. I was in manual mode though. I’m gonna try some outdoor photos because I like natural light too. Yes, I can DO THIS! I really appreciate your advice Erica.
