DIY Maxi Dress – McCall’s 7591

Happy Wednesday everyone!

We are back from vacation and my-my-my, did we have a wonderful time.  I’m exhausted!  Some vacations are just like that.  You return home and need another week to recover.  My time clock hasn’t quite caught up to USA time yet, but I should be good by Friday.  Hahaha!

This trip was a celebration of the recent retirement of my husband and another close friend.  We started out in Prague, Czech Republic for three days, then took a cruise along the Danube River, visiting the amazing cities of Regensburg, Nuremburg, and Passau in Germany, Vienna, Austria, and Budapest, Hungary.  It was such an amazing trip and one we will remember forever.  I have way too many photos to share, so I will keep it to a minimum between today and next week.

Congratulations to the two retirees – Cecil & Eric!

Unfortunately my husband was injured on this trip so we weren’t able to participate in all the wonderful walking tours that were offered.  We did go out into town on our own whenever the ship docked.  There were eight couples in our group and everyone was so helpful with my husband.  His mobility was very minimal and he didn’t want to be a burden on anyone, but all our friends made sure he was taken care of.  Although he hated being in this condition, his attitude was wonderful for the entire time.  He made the best of his trip and I’m so grateful to God that we were able to go, despite the injury.

Today, I’m sharing one of the dresses I wore while we were in Vienna.  I must say that Vienna was my favorite.  We went into town and had breakfast at Cafe Central, the best Coffee House in Vienna (as we were told).  The food was incredible but I didn’t pay attention to what I was ordering and got a plate full of bread.  Yikes!  It was so funny when the waiter put the plate in front of me.  I looked at my husband and we both cracked up laughing.  Anyway, my croissant was the best I’ve ever had in my life.

After breakfast we went to World of Souvenirs, a huge two-story building with every souvenir you can think of.  Oooh, I had a shopping good time.  I decided to collect teaspoons while on this trip, so I picked up a teaspoon from every city we visited.

The highlight of our time in Vienna was the horse and carriage ride through the town.  Oh how wonderful it was to sit in the open carriage and see all the beautiful buildings and architecture.  It was kind of strange too because people were staring and waving at us.  Then they started taking pictures of us.  We came to the conclusion that they thought we were celebrities or something. Hahaha!  It was so funny.

I LOVE this dress!  I sewed view D because I’m partial to long dresses.  I think I’d like to make view B also with the racerback.  It was pretty easy to sew with six pieces for construction.  I lined the bodice with the same fabric used for the dress.  I wore it casually with flip flops, but I can also see it all dressed up with sandal heels and a clutch purse.

Looks like an amazing time. I love tea cups maybe you can show a couple. lol The dress is so pretty, as usual. Glad you had so much fun.

Hi Anita! I’m glad you had a wonderful time. Nuremburg, Germany is my birthplace. I drink a lot of tea, and that tea cup set in one of your photos got me thinking that I need to find one just like it. I’m sure you got plenty of inspiration for your sewing creations. Maybe the folks there thought your husband was a professional athlete. You both are beautiful and an adorable couple. God Bless!

    Hi Anita,
I am amazed at your wonderful blog and tutorials. I recently discovered them and am thrilled. You are an amazing women. Thank you for sharing so much about you and sewing!

I am a new sewer with some machine quilting experience and I am very excited to get started with your tutorial for the circle skirt. I have a question. On your video for this project, you measure you waist and it looks like it is around 30″(my waist is also 30″). This correlates to size 16 on the Butterick B4686 pattern package for the circle skirt. However, in your video in the fabric store, you purchase pattern envelope AA which is for sizes 6-8-10-12, waist 23′ to 26 1/2′. Am I missing something? Since my waist is 30″ is pattern size 16 correct? Thank you!!

Hi Cathy! Please excuse my delayed response. I’ve taken a break from blogging to care for my husband.

You are correct in your observation. I cut a size 12 because I used a knit fabric which stretches and I wanted a very snug fit in the waist. What I have learned since recording this video is than some women have found their skirts to be too large, so this pattern actually runs large (even when you follow the suggested measurements). If you measure a 30″ at waist, you can try cutting a size 12, but I suggest you make a practice garment using an old sheet or very cheap fabric. Sew the skirt together without finishing the edges or inserting the zipper. You’re only sewing it up to the point of being able to try it on to see how it fits at the waist. Instead of inserting the zipper, just try the skirt on and have someone pin it closed for you in the back. After your fitting, you can decide if the size works for you or if you need to try a larger size. I sure hope this helps.
