Kelly Anorak Jacket – Closet Case Patterns

Hello everyone!  Finally, I have joined hundreds (maybe even thousands) of other seamstresses all over the world, and sewn my first Indie Pattern.   I chose the Kelly Anorak Jacket – Closet Case Patterns as my first Indie because I’ve wanted to add more outerwear to my wardrobe.  Also, I was very curious about this one because so many women are sewing her.

What is an Indie Pattern

You may be familiar with the Big Four Pattern Companies – Simplicity, Vogue, Butterick & McCall’s. There are also Independent Pattern Companies.  These consist of independent pattern designers who create their own patterns (Indie Patterns) and make them available to the public for purchase through either printed material, pdf downloads, or both.

Fiona, with Diary of a Chainstitcher, has constructed a list of Indie Pattern Designers that she was able to find through her own search.  Wow! I had NO idea there were so many (and this is not even ALL of them).  She did a great job organizing the designers by category, making it easy for us to find what we’re looking for.  I was very happy to see a good number of designers for menswear.  There’s even a category for “Sewing Books” by Independent Designers.  It is definitely a “growing industry.”

I’ve heard that sewing with Indie Patterns is preferred by some seamstresses.  Since this is only my first, I don’t have enough experience with Indies to choose one over the other.  I plan to sew with more Indie patterns this year, so that I’ll be able to make a determination as to my preference later on.  I’m really excited about incorporating these patterns into my library, and I think the Kelly Anorak Jacket – Closet Case Patterns is a great start.

What is an Anorak Jacket?

Believe it or not, I didn’t know this jacket style was called “Anorak.”  I’ve seen this style, and even worn it ( I have a hooded one in my closet that I purchased many years ago.).  I wanted to know the meaning of this term, so I went to online dictionaries, and below are a few definitions I found.

  • The Free Dictionary – A jacket with a hood, especially one that provides protection from harsh weather.
  • Oxford Dictionary – A waterproof jacket, typically with a hood, of a kind originally used in polar regions.
  • WikipediaA parka or anorak is a type of coat with a hood, often lined with fur or faux fur. The hood protects the face from freezing temperatures and wind. The Caribou Inuit invented this kind of garment, originally made from caribou or seal skin, for hunting and kayaking in the frigid Arctic.Kelly Anorak Jacket - Closet Case Patterns

As I mentioned above, I’ve seen many seamstresses sewing this jacket, so I wanted to give her a try.  Being that it was my first Indie sew, I wanted to really take my time with it and get as much information as possible before starting.  My first step was reading the instruction booklet that came with the pattern to get an idea of the ease or difficulty, and style of the written instructions.  Next, I went to patternreview.com to read reviews on this pattern from other seamstresses.  This is something I do often, as some reviewers alert us to issues encountered when sewing the patterns, and give suggestions or solutions to overcoming them.  Finally, I went to the Closet Case Files Blog to check out blog posts for a Sew-Along they did for this jacket.  Armed with information from all three sources, I felt ready and confident that this would be an easy sew, not different from what I’ve done with other patterns.

I’m very pleased with the outcome of this jacket.  I will probably make it again, but in a larger size so that it may be worn over bulky sweaters.  I’d also like to make it as a vest.  It really is a nice construction, if I must say so myself, and should last a long time.

Kelly Anorak Jacket - Closet Case Patterns

Traditionally, the anorak jacket is constructed of a lightweight fabric, but I chose to make mine with a medium/heavy weight, camouflage denim.  I also opted out of the hooded version and went with a stand-up collar.  The traditional anorak is lined, but I left mine unlined.  The pattern does not include instructions for a lining, but you can use the pattern pieces for the front, back, and sleeve to construct one.  There is a tutorial on the Closet Case Files Blog on how to add an interlining to this jacket for warmth.  So, while I didn’t sew a traditional anorak, I had an idea of what I wanted mine to look like, complete with styling options. It turned out exactly as I envisioned it.  Of course it looks great with a pair of jeans, but I also see it being worn over a cute pencil skirt and fitted t-shirt.  How about throwing it on over a maxi skirt/dress, a pair of booties, and newsboy cap?  I think I see more of these jackets in my future.

FYI: I purchased my camouflage denim from Manny Fabrics, a local fabric store in the Garment District of Downtown, Los Angeles. They don’t have a website but if you’re ever in the area, they’re located near the corner of Wall  Street & 9th Street (around the corner from Michael Levine Fabrics).  I have linked to other fabric options below.

Great review of this pattern, which has been on my “to do” list for a while. You’ve convinced me! Your make is so cute and your notes so informative. Plus, thanks for the link to the indie pattern maker list!

  4. Jill

Such a cute make, Anita! I like it! I’m not a big fan of hoods, so the stand collar with cinched waist is such a practical, and pretty option. Question: Did you get the hardware kit from Closet Case Patterns also? Or, did you source it elsewhere?

Great job Anita & thanks for the information on the additional Indie Patterns. I’m very interested in checking out the variety of styles (especially for menswear).
Your love for sewing shows in your style.

    1. Anita Morris

Hey Deborah! Yes, have fun going through the list of designers. Thank you so much!

  14. Tomasa

Love how your jacket turned out! I too have been eyeing this particular pattern and have decided to purchase it. When I will actually sew it up is another story but I want to have the pattern so when the mood strikes, I will proceed. I mostly use the Big 4 because I “know” their sizing from using them for so many years but there are a couple of Indies that I have used successfully. One of them is Closet Case files Ginger Jeans (well I am still working on them but so far, so good…I will post about them when I am done). I have also successfully sewn the Grainline Archer shirt. StyleArc is another good Indie pattern line. Indies are a mixed bag. Many of them have too many basics and it is hard for them to offer variety and keep up with trends because of the cost. However, you are right in checking out PatternReview first. There you will get a feel for which Indies are the good ones.

    1. Anita Morris

Hi Tomasa! I think you’re gonna love the Kelly Anorak. I have the Ginger Jeans too and can’t wait to sew them up. I’ll have to check out Grainline Archer. I LOVE PatternReview.

  15. Art

    Great job! You look great!

  16. Sandra

Beautiful skills as usual. Luv me some camo ????

    1. Anita Morris

Thanks Sandra! Someone mentioned pink camo in one of the sewing groups, and now I want it. Hahaha!

    2. Anita Morris

Thanks Sandra! Someone mentioned pink camo in one of the sewing groups, and now I want it. Hahaha!

  17. Genevieve

Wow Anita!!! God really shines thru you on this one! My first thought…then I began to feel jealous that I had not thought to make my CCF Kelly with Camo fabric. Immediately I felt convicted and went right back to “No, I am INSPIRED!” I have made Kelly and love it, but of late have been drawn to Camo prints and will begin my search for a jacket weight to create my own 2nd Kelly. You are definitely Blessed by our Father. ?

    1. Anita Morris

Hey Genevieve! Yes, I love how you turned that around to being “Inspired.” Ooooh, gosh, yes we are both blessed!

  18. Bev

Hi Anita. I too have this pattern as well as the claire coat from the same company. They’re on my list to makes to do (eventually!) I love Colette patterns as they come in a gorgeous wallet with the very best most informative instructions which are so helpful to newer sewers. Style Arc have hundreds of extremely trendy high street styles but having purchased one I’m disappointed with the lack of information on how to assemble. They won’t be much if a problem for advanced sewers. This is such a shame for us beginner/intermediate folk. Your Kelly jacket looks great and I can see endless possibilities with it. Eagerly awaiting your next video tutorials on utube. Keep up the good work x

    1. Anita Morris

Hi Bev! I’m thinking about the Claire Coat, but not sure yet. I’m going for the Nettie next. I’ll have to try a Coletter pattern too. I have one Style Arc pattern but the first time I opened it I was shocked (confused) by the line drawings and just folded it back up for later. Now that I’m into the Indie patterns, I must pull it out and try it. Hahaha! The next video is coming this month.

  19. Sam

I love these types of jackets as the cinched waist makes it look more feminine and your choice of army print gives the jacket a bit of an “edge”…love, love, love it!

    1. Anita Morris

Thank you so much Sam. I love it too.

  20. Lori Bernard

    So cute

  21. Dari

Hi, Anita! I very much love Closet Case Patterns and recently I purchased a dress pattern from By Hand London that I fell in love with. StyleArc is another that has fabulous designs. I really love the jacket and I think that you styled it beautifully. Xoxo

    1. Anita Morris

Heeey Dari! Yes, I’ll be checking out By Hand London one day too. Already have a Style Arc pattern.

  22. Faye Lewis

Your jacket is gorgeous! Where did you get your hardware? I’m a big Indie Pattern fan, although I have to take a chill pill when it comes to taping PDF’s but I will do it if I love the pattern. I have made a few.

    1. Anita Morris

Thanks Faye! I picked up the hardware from my local JoAnn’s. They didn’t have the 1/2″ snaps, so I went with the 5/8″ because I didn’t want to wait to order them. I did search for them online though and they’re not easy to find. My JoAnn’s didn’t have the smaller grommets, so I went with the button hole instead. I’m gonna order more hardware online for future use.

I just ordered my first PDF Indie. I’ve done one with a hat before but that doesn’t count to me. I’m looking forward to my first pdf garment. I’m hoping to get to it this month, but not sure.

I have to go watch your coat scopes because I missed all the live tapings.

  23. JENNIFER DAVIS

Very nice! I love how you put the outfit together. I’m loving the booties. I am going to have to purchase this pattern and put it on the shelf until I am at that level of sewing.

    1. Anita Morris

Thanks Sherry! Yes, I think it’s a “must-have” pattern. I just love it!

  25. Sandra

Very nice, Anita! Your construction is impeccable. I love the way you styled it with the combat boots and booties. I see what you mean about the jacket being so versatile. God Bless!

      Hi Paulette! You’re very welcome!

  30. Angela Hill

Ms. Anita, I really like this jacket I saw it on the website and didn’t get it because by me learning how to sew I didn’t take a chance on getting it but you really look nice in this jacket, was it hard to sew? Maybe I’ll get the pattern and hold it until I feel confident to sew. Thanks for showing.

    1. Anita Morris

Hi Angela! I would not recommend this pattern for a beginner. It is not hard to sew, however, there are skills that you will need to master before attempting this one. If you are an advanced beginner, you may be able to follow along with the written tutorial on their blog.

  31. Anya

Lovely jacket! It looks so fabulous on you! I love how you’ve picked the camouflage denim as your fabric. I also have my eyes set on this pattern. It is still very cold here in Calgary, but it will be a perfect spring jacket. And welcome to the indie world!
Also, it is such a thorough post. I really enjoyed it.

    1. Anita Morris

Hi Anya! Thank you so much! Yaaay, I’m so glad to be joining you in Indie world.

Heeeeeyyyy sew sister! Ooooh, now I’m all excited to talk about Indie patterns. I have a Style Arc pattern that I’ve had for the longest time. I’ll have to check out Salme. I love simple, classic lines. Thanks for stopping by.
