The Laura Dress – Rosy Peña Patterns

Happy Wednesday everyone! I hope you had a wonderful time with family and friends for Christmas. I spent Christmas day, which also happens to be CEMO’s birthday, with him and our two sons. We relaxed the entire day while watching movies, and enjoyed a delicious Christmas/Birthday dinner. It was a perfect pajama kind of day for me. I’m happiest when my entire family is home together. I smiled a lot on Monday. Watching our sons take care of their dad, the joking around, the birthday phone calls, praying together, our neighbors coming over to bring yummy gumbo and sing happy birthday to Cecil, and watching him take the first bite of that birthday cake he’s been talking about all month–PRICELESS! That one day was enough to carry me for the entire week.

Today’s look is from the new Rosy Peña Patterns Collection. Rosy launched her new pattern company around Thanksgiving and she’s already released two patterns. Congratulations Rosy!!! The Laura is her first release, and this is my version of View B, the dress. I used a sweater knit that I picked up from Joann Fabrics. I first saw this fabric in a cream color and fell in love. I purchased it in three colors; cream, green, and burgundy. I knew I would use one of them for the Laura Dress. I love the loose fit of the pattern and thought it would be awesome in a sweater knit. I styled it with a pair of thick, black tights and ankle boots. I also made a slouchy hat with the leftover fabric. I used Simplicity 8036 for the hat. This is the same hat I made with my long tunic style top/dress HERE. The dress also looks nice layered. I wore it to church on Sunday with a turtleneck underneath to keep my neck warm (didn’t get any photos).

Okay beginners, you’re gonna love this one because it’s super easy to sew. There are only 4 pattern pieces and the instructions are very clear and easy to follow. Rosy’s patterns are in pdf form, and she created a video that shows you how to print and assemble the pattern from home. Her video was a great help because I’ve actually had trouble printing pdf patterns from my computer. We purchased a new printer since the last time I tried a pdf. This time I followed Rosy’s instructions and everything worked out fine. Although I’m still not a fan of pdf patterns because of the assembly required, I’m willing to put in the work for the ones that scream for me. I have a few others waiting to be printed, so now I’m looking forward to giving those a try too.

I decided to try this pattern for three reasons. 1) It gives me that relaxed vibe, which is what I’m reaching for right now. 2) It’s a simple pattern, making it perfect to showcase beautiful fabrics without disturbing the design of the fabric. 3) I wanted to support Rosy in her new venture. If you’re interested in trying this pattern, you may purchase it at rosypenapatterns.com. Rosy has created several looks with her pattern and you can see them all on her Blog. You may also follow her on Instagram @rosypenapatterns.

Well, I’m getting a little better with my photos. I’m still experimenting and watching YouTube videos until I learn all I need to know to get the quality I want. I’m proud of myself for this week’s improvement though. Once I get comfortable enough with still photos, I’ll be moving on to learning how to record my own videos so that I can resume creating tutorials for you guys. I have some great project ideas that I think you will like, including a series that I had hoped to start in 2017. I continue to take it one day at a time, and I really do enjoy being able to sew again.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to your family. I love the dress, but I have not learned to sew with knit. Looking forward to learning how to sew with that type of fabric. I really enjoyed your blog and You Tube. You’re very inspirational personal to others. I loved that spirit about you. You give me hope in learning to sew, not only that but in our Heavenly farther. Thanks for kind spirit

    1. Anita Morris

Oh, thank you so much LeJeun! You will learn to sew with knits. It’s not that hard. Check out some of the books about sewing with knits to learn and practice with scraps.
