Simplicity Pattern Reviews – DIY Pants & Top

Hello everyone!

Today’s DIY look is inspired by two patterns from the Simplicity Pattern Company.  If you’re new to sewing, these are both beginner friendly, and I’ve provided two quick pattern reviews for you below.

Simplicity Pattern Reviews - DIY Pants & Top

Pattern Review – Simplicity 8393 – Palazzo Pants

Pattern Description:  Create a classic wardrobe with these essential pieces in Misses and Plus sizes. Pattern features pull-on pants with optional side slits, top in two lengths, and a cardigan that is sized for stretch knits. Top has extended sleeve with round neckline that is detailed with a small slit and button. The knit cardigan has two large pockets and side slits.

Pattern Sizing: Available in sizes 10 – 28W

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes it did.

Were the instructions easy to follow? The instructions are simple and easy to follow.  Very beginner friendly.  I didn’t need them, but I did read through them for the purpose of writing this review.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I love the side slits and quick sew.

Fabric used:  I used a textured double knit.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I didn’t make any alterations or changes.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? I will definitely sew these pants again in a more casual fabric.  I wanted to dress up the first pair for a dinner date with my husband.  Yes, I recommend this pattern, especially for beginners.

Conclusion: I really like the pants.  The side slits give them a nice edge.

Pattern Review – Simplicity 8386 – Single Sleeve Top

Pattern Description:  Create these easy-to-sew Misses knit tops in three styles. Sleeveless top has choker style neckline that ties at back with cross-over bodice. One shoulder style features one long sleeve in a classic T-shirt length. The off-the-shoulder look features a cropped length. Sized for stretch knits only. Simplicity easy-to-sew pattern.

Pattern Sizing: Available in sizes 4 – 20

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes it did.

Were the instructions easy to follow? The instructions are simple and easy to follow.  Very beginner friendly.  The pattern company rates this pattern as “easy-to-sew” and I agree.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I love the single sleeve design and t-shirt length..

Fabric used:  I used a textured double knit.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I didn’t make any alterations or changes.  I actually needed a swayback adjustment, but in my haste to get it done, I neglected that detail.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? I will definitely sew this top again in a jersey or ITY knit and include a swayback adjustment.  Yes, this is a great pattern for beginners.

Conclusion: I absolutely love this top.  It can be worn with so many garments (jeans, maxi skirt, pencil skirt, circle skirt, slacks).  I think it would look great as a dress also.Simplicity Pattern Reviews - DIY Pants & Top

Oh Ms Anita u look stunning as usual! Have you thought about a YouTube video for beginners who have not worked with knit? I don’t know the difference between double textured knit, jersey and ITY. I still have not been brave enough to conquer knits – don’t know where to begin.
BTW that purple/maroon color looks amazing on you.

    1. Anita Morris

Hey DeAnna! Yeeeeesssss! I’m actually in the planning stages of a new series called “Sewing with Knits” where I will share everything I know, and I’m doing more research. So stay tuned. I’m pretty excited about this series. I really think it’s gonna be awesome. Thanks so much for asking. I knew there had to be interest about this.

  15. Marilyn

    Hi Anita,
While these patterns are not my style (I’m 71,short, and chubby), they are quite lovely on you. I wanted to remind you that I am the one whose son so very much wanted the robe you made for your husband and sons. I made 2 for me and one for him. When he came to visit, he absolutely loved his robe and wants me to make another one for him. He lives in the Windy City (Chicago.} I will make him another fleece robe as well as one in seersucker. When I showed my fleece robe to my friend, she wanted one so off we went to JoAnn’s and she picked out a pretty fleece. Your directions were very clear and easy to follow and I’ve turned into the ‘robe lady.’ Since they work up rather quickly, I think I’ll make some to donate to our local nursing home. Thank you so very, very much. God bless you for sharing your gift with others. Your methods are so much like my mom’s as she was a perfectionist I’m not there yet but am working on it.

    1. Anita Morris

Hiiiii Marilyn! Oh, I’m so glad to hear from you and very pleased that your robes have become a big hit. I’m smiling at your new title, “Robe Lady.” It really warms my heart to know that you are sharing your gift from God with others. Have fun sewing the robes for residents at your local nursing home. Yes, you are blessed to be a blessing. Thank you so much for sharing.

  16. LaToria

You absolutely beautiful Anita. Great job as usual. A few years ago I made a top very similar to yours, I will be wearing it to a cookout on Father’s Day. Hopefully I will get someone to take a picture of me in it so I can post it so you can see it.

    1. Anita Morris

Thanks LaToria! Oh, I would love to see your top. Enjoy your Father’s Day cookout.

  17. Sandi Shorter

    1. Anita Morris
