Vintage Style Dress and Jacket – Vogue 8687 & 8146

Hello everyone!

I’m sure you’re all quite busy since it’s 4 days until Christmas, so I will keep this very short.  After writing this post I will be starting my holiday baking.  I didn’t get to decorate my house for Christmas this year because we’re in the middle of a remodel, but I do have access to my kitchen.  Then on Saturday, I get to bake my husband’s birthday cake.

Today, I’m sharing another oldie but goodie.  I made this vintage style dress and jacket last year.  The gorgeous brocade fabric was gifted to me by a dear friend who bought it and never used it.  The minute I laid eyes on it I knew it would be my Easter outfit.  When I pulled out this vintage-style dress pattern (unfortunately out-of-print), I knew I had a winner for the fabric.  Then, when I flipped through my patterns and saw the jacket, I got really excited.  As if that wasn’t enough, I just had to do something with the leftover fabric, so a clutch purse was the perfect addition to complete the ensemble.  I count this among one of my favorite makes so far.  It is a great construction and I’m really proud of the outcome.

The gloves I’m wearing were gifted to me also.  They belonged to a very special lady.  She was the grandmother of my dear friends Sheila and Michelle.  Everyone called her Madear.  After she went home to be with the Lord about a year and a half ago, at the tender age of 99 years old, Sheila gave me about 5 or 6 pairs of her beautiful gloves.  My heart was beyond overjoyed to have something that belonged to her.  She was a very stylish lady.  Every time I saw her she was SHARP, from head to toe.  She sewed her own garments up until about a year before her passing.  The last garment I remember seeing her in was a beautiful suit she made to wear to a Ladies’ Tea at our church.  Oh honey, she was styling and proud!  Madear was one sassy lady, and I sure do miss seeing her.  I cherish every pair of gloves I have from her and I will think of her every time I wear a pair.  They are truly a treasure.

I wish you all a very Merry Christmas!  May the joy of the Lord Jesus Christ bring you hope, joy, peace, and love all the days of your life.

NEVER MISS A POST!!!  Don’t forget to subscribe to my email list to be notified of future blog posts.

Anita! I can’t believe you are still able to take my breath away with this dress! You are incredible! That outfit would be too much on any other woman but you rock it so well.

Those gloves… Did you make them yourself? Wow a total stunner

    1. Anita Morris

Hey Vienna! Thank you so much! The gloves were gifted to me from a friend. I love them so much because they belonged to her grandmother who was a very stylish woman, and sewed her own clothes too.

Mrs. Anita just let me say, WOW! I came upon your youtube post while on a 10 hour drive home, of course hubby was driving, because I’m about to indulge into sewing and was looking for a class to attend. I was drawn from the first look and I know this is not by chance but designed by God Himself. WOW to your designs, but most importantly, WOW to your design-God’s Design. This is more than about sewing fabric, it’s also about sowing seeds. Even now I feel God’s presence. You are such an inspiration and I thank you for allowing God to work in and through you. There doesn’t have to be an interest in sewing to be encouraged thru your blog; however, I am interested and have been for months and I know God connected me to your blog. I’m so excited and ready to take this sowing/sewing journey. By the way I love, love, love the outfit. I know this is God because I never ever blog.

    1. Anita Morris

Oh Peggy, thank you so much for this beautiful message. My heart is so beyond amazed right now. You are so correct when you say this is about more than sewing. When I started this blog my heart desired that it would be a place where women are encouraged, beyond sewing. According to your message and the feedback I’m receiving from others, that’s exactly what God is doing. He’s using this to encourage others. Yes, this is His Design. I’m watching, listening, and learning along the way. Thank you again for reaching out to me. I am so glad you found my youtube channel. God bless you! Happy New year!

You’ve outdone yourself. I will be following your website, for more beautiful outfits. Hopefully, I’ll be inspired to pull out my sewing machine.

Happy sewing and have a happy new year.

    Althea

  9. Sew Stylish

What a classy vintage ensemble, bet your stylish elderly friend would have approved. I like your comment that when you live in your design, it’s from there God can shine. I never would have thought to link faith and sewing together, but it’s a big part of my life so it makes sense, whatever we do, we can do it wholeheartedly, giving praise to God. Merry CHristmas.

    1. Anita Morris

Yes, yes, YES! He IS my life, so He must be a part of every aspect. Thank you so much for your comment.

Is your husband a Christmas Eve birthday? I had our son, Adam, on Christmas Eve.
Merry Christmas to you and your family.

    1. Anita Morris

  12. LaToria

Very nice as usual Anita. I knew that jacket looked familiar, I have that pattern also and it’s on my to do list to sew. Happy Holidays to you and your family.

  13. Natasha

This is beautiful! I was expecting to see a sharp church hat with this one, lol! I started trying to teach myself to sew a year ago but not many successes to date. Thanks again for sharing your gift.

    1. Anita Morris

LOL! Thanks Natasha! Now giiiirrrrl, you KNOW I meant to go back and make a hat because I had more leftover fabric. My plan was to make a pill box hat, but the fabric has gone missing on me. I hope I didn’t get rid of it with a big box of scraps I let go. A pill box hat would be SHARP and set it OFF!

  14. Sonja

Ms. Anita….all I can say is WOW!!!! Very nice.

  16. Julia

Yes, the only fabric store in her tiny town was Country Town Fabrics, and she made these gorgeous outfits, a lot of suits, and she let me and my mom sleep in her big antique bed, and I was in heaven! She was very elderly, of course, lived in a rather large ground floor apartment, and kept saying her car ‘wouldn’t run’. I went out and looked and she had driven over the concrete ‘bumper’ and got it stuck. Oh, well, it’s been interesting living with the elderly, they have a lot of gifts that we need to learn from. We need to be cognizant of that and celebrate their accomplishments! I know you get that from your beautiful mom! Love to you all!

  17. Faye Lewis

The color, the fit, and that vent all perfect!

  18. Faye Lewis

Gorgeous ensemble Anita. The color, the fit and that vent in the back are wonderful!

  28. Jody

This outfit has just knocked my socks off, just remarkable. I am right back in the 60s enjoying the vibe. Love your story about how you received the gloves. Take care.

    1. Anita Morris

      Thanks Jody! Merry Christmas!

  29. Marilyn

Absolutely lovely but not for my chubby body. I recall my dear mom wearing outfits like this. She was a designer and seamstress extraordinaire, unlike her daughter. The jacket is stunning and I could pull that off so I will look forward to your tutorial. I very much recall the days of opera length gloves; the days when ladies dressed and acted like ladies.
Thank you for sharing and I am eagerly awaiting the tutorial on the jacket as well as the robes. My son keeps asking when he will receive his and I told him he will get it as soon as Ms. Anita gives a tutorial on it. May you and your family be blessed abundantly during this glorious season of His Holy Birth.

    1. Anita Morris

Thank you so much, Marilyn. Yes, those were the days of the classy lady.

You had me laughing so hard about telling your son he’s getting his robe when I do a tutorial. I’m gonna have expedite that tutorial so that baby can have his robe. What’s your son’s name and how old is he?

      1. Marilyn

My ‘baby boy,’ Matthew will turn 50 in April but will always be mom’s baby. I sent him the picture of the gray and black robe your son is wearing and he loved it. I told him he can’t really appreciate it until he feels how soft and plush it is. I was fortunate to get the exact fabric on sale at JoAnn’s. I’ll eagerly await the tutorial and in the meantime I’ll continue sewing my dresses for the girls in Haiti. My dear mom was a perfectionist and didn’t have the patience to teach me. She designed and made her own wedding gown compete with headpiece and train. She hand sewed a variety of tiny beads all over the bodice. My dad taught at FIT. If I made a mistake, Mom would rip it out and fix it herself. As a result, I gave up on sewing until I found your superb tutorials. I appreciate that you explain and model every little detail, assuming we know nothing. It’s a huge help. Thank you and may God bless you and your family during this glorious season of His Holy Birth. He was born to die so that we might live with Him.

  30. Nola

My heavens! Now that is fierce!

    Speechless…..

Thanks Nola! Merry CHRISTmas to you and your family too.

  31. Rochelle

    Ms. Anita,
Get it lady! Lining?? What kind of lining did you use for the dress? Did you line the jacket as well?

Your designs are amazing. I love it! Keep them coming and yes please do a tutorial for the clutch. Merry Christmas!

    1. Anita Morris

Hi Rochelle! Thank you so much! Surprisingly, there is no lining in either garment.

  32. Julia

Ooolalaaa! That is a perfect job and love the back! Your story reminds me of when I took my mom to her 70th HS reunion and we stayed with her best friend who had three closets full of beautiful clothes she made, so inspiring! HBD to your hubby! My birthday is next week, so I’ll have a piece of cake too, please. 🙂 We cappies are very dependable, aren’t we? hee-hee! We grumble a bit…but we’ll do the job! Merry Christmas!

    1. Alejandra B
