CABLE KNIT SWEATER | BUTTERICK 6966

Last weekend I flew to Atlanta to teach a workshop on Sewing with Sweater Knits. Sheryl, with the Atlanta Chapter of American Sewing Guild invited me to share my tips with their members and I was honored to say yes. I don’t usually teach in-person sewing classes, but this was an opportunity that excited me. This is the cable knit sweater I made in the workshop while sharing best practices on working with sweater knit fabrics. Let’s get into the details. (Warning: Lots of photos)

Pattern Information
Butterick 6966 is a Palmer/Pletsch design and includes a close-fitting pullover top with neckline and sleeve variations; fitted, straight-legged or slightly flared pants with elastic waist. There are no side seams on the pants.ย

The company rates the pattern as EASY and I agree. If you have basic sewing skills you should be able to complete the garments included. The instructions are very straight forward and simple to follow. It is available in both Print and PDF options, ranging in sizes from 6 – 22.

Fabric Information
The pattern is designed for Stretch Knits only, such as; Jersey, Rib Knits and Modal. I used my favorite Cable Sweater Knit that I purchased from JoAnn Fabrics. I have this fabric in several colors because I love it so much. I’ve made quite a number of garments with it and love the outcome of each piece. I’m dreading the day that I run out because JoAnn’s is gone.

Inside the Garment
The Atlanta Sewing Center provided me with the Baby Lock Chorus Sewing Machine and Baby Lock Victory Serger to use during the workshop. Some of the ladies used the Victory Serger to finish their seam allowances too. Here are a few closeup photos of the inside of my sweater.

Styling the Garment
I wore my sweater to a Thanksgiving Event on Thursday with a group called Business Women of God. I was so excited when I pulled out myย Skirt by Sister Mag Patterns. It’s a perfect color match. I paired it with my animal print kitten heel sandals, brown bucket bag, rhinestone earrings, and beaded bracelets. Oh my goodness! I love this outfit! Here are styling photos and a few images from the event.

Sweater Knit Workshop
I provided the ASG Members with a checklist of items to bring to the workshop. This was not a learn to sew class. It was designated for those who already have basic sewing skills. In the first half of the workshop, we cut our fabrics, then set up our machines. After lunch, we sewed our sweaters as I shared tips along the way. If you’d like to see a few of the tips I shared at the workshop WATCH THIS VIDEO. They all did great work and I had so much fun spending time with them. Here are some photos of their work.

Excellent job, well done.
I absolutely love this dress. Well done! ๐ I am going to look for similar fabric. Thank you so much for in the inspiration. I am an intermediate beginner. I am hoping to can run this project as well as you have. Just Lovely Anita:):)
Hi Anita
When I read the recent blog post, I was surprised and happy to see that your white sweater knit fabric was the same white sweater knit fabric that I am currently using to make a very cute top. The top is short sleeved, and it has pleats toward the arm band. I love the pattern so much that this is the second time I have used it. I made another top in navy blue and it turned out so cute. Yes, I am disappointed in Joann fabrics and I’m wondering when my stash gets low, how I will replace some of my favorites that I got at Joann’s on the spur of the moment.
I watched the video and noted so many good tips you gave on sewing knits. Thank you.
I love the white sweater top and the white skirt together. It looks fabulous on you, as usual.
Lovely outfit! Yes I have used this fabric a couple of times. It very easy to sew!
I love the outfit! I have sweater knit that I want to sew up, but it’s lightweight. I’m concerned about stretching. The smiles on their faces says it all. I’m glad you made the choice to attend the event. Way to go Anita!
Love it! I really like knits but I get intimidated. I need to watch a few more videos and practice on some scraps to get my stitches right. Your outfit is lovely. Thanks for sharing.
Everyone did a wonderful job! Thanks for sharing. I always learn something new. I have some fabric and the same pattern. It was on my list. I plan to make the top and pants! I like the variety of examples by the other seamstresses..Thanks to everyone! Please come to the Northern VA area, Anita!
Talk about CUTE, Anita!!!!! I have this exact pattern, but I was planning to do it in a Ponte. I never imagined doing it in a cable knit. I am so glad to hear you are teaching. Atlanta is blessed.
Sincerely, Kim Oliver
Thank you so much for the information! I have the same sweater knit only in grey and the same pattern you used. I did not think to put them together. I will get started this weekend!
I just love the entire outfit. You do outstanding work. I love the cable knit but I’m afraid of the stretching.
Hi Anita A loverly outfit I will sew the top but like so many off I do worry about sewing with knit fabric. X
Would love to. But just not experienced enough yet. Wish I lived in USA then I could come to your classes
Love your outfit, love the color, love the pattern, too. I think if I sewed as much as you did, Anita, I might become as slim and fit as you! Thanks for sharing the details of your outfit with us, and showing the fun your class had. We should all have such nice, huge tables to cut our fabric on.
Anita, you are blessing others with your talent! Love the cable knit fabric. I purchased tan and green from Joannโs and I too am dreading the day I run out. Stay blessed! ๐๐พ๐
Omg! This could not have come at a better time. I have this exact pattern AND the same sweater knit, in several colors, too. I pulled out the fabric yesterday wondering what to do with it. Thank you for solving my problem!!
LOVE that you posted pictures of the INSIDE of your garment! I think the inside shows more sometimes than the outside of a garment.
Yes, I like sharing the inside. I’m glad you appreciate that detail.
Oh how I wish I was there. I am definitely getting this pattern for the top. I love it.
Thank you so much for sharing.
I’m glad you had a good time and the ladies looked like they did too
You’re welcome, Lynette! Yes, the top is definitely worth having the pattern – a staple piece.
Very classy outfit, like it very much, like to get the pattern myself
