LINEN SUMMER DRESS | MCCALL'S 7774

THIS is the goal as I continue rebuilding my wardrobe. The color is rich, the design is classic. It exudes elegance, grace, and femininity. When I go into my closet, I want to smile because all my options are in alignment with my personal style and lifestyle. Since I have already written a blog post about this pattern, there won’t be as many details. You can read the last post HERE. Today is more about inspiration for the upcoming Sew Along for this dress. Let’s get into the details.

Pattern Information
MCCALL’S 7774 is seven years old but I purchased it recently. Views A & B are loose fitting pullover dresses with v-neck fronts, side seam pockets and above the knee hem. View A has a keyhole opening at center back and flounce at bottom of skirt.. Views C & D have fitted bodice with bust darts, gathered waist skirt, side seam pockets, invisible back zipper, v-front opening and length variations. View C has a band at the bottom (lower front and back). Views A & B are partially lined. Views C & D have fully lined bodices. They are referred to as facings in the pattern.

The pattern is available on the Simplicity website in both print and PDF options with a size range of 6 – 22. It is rated as EASY. Whenever I see an “easy” rating, I think about beginners. While this looks like a simple design, I would not recommend it for new beginners. You must be familiar with; inserting linings, sewing the shoulder seams together between outer and lining fabric without twisting it, and sewing a clean finish on the bodice with an invisible zipper. If there were no lining, I would say, YES, beginner-friendly.

Fabric Information
The pattern calls for Crepe, Linen, Stable Knits, and Cotton Blends. I used a Chocolate 100% Linen fabric that purchased from Downtown, Los Angeles. Unfortunately they don’t have a website. But you should be able to find linen at most online fabric stores. I used a stunning LYOCEL TWILL DEADSTOCK from Core Fabrics in the color Forest Green for the first dress I made with this pattern. As part of my collaboration with Core Fabrics, you can receive 15% off your entire order at CORE FABRICS by using my NEW code (ANITA*15) at checkout. Discount does not apply to sale items.

Inside the Garment
I used my Baby Lock Chorus sewing machine and Vibrant Serger to sew the dress. Since the linen frays quite a bit, I finished the raw edges of the skirt pieces and pockets with my serger to prevent the threads from unraveling during construction. If you don’t have a serger, you can use pinking shears to help reduce the fraying. Here are a few closeup photos of the inside of the dress.

Styling Options
I’ve styled the dress with gold jewelry, a brown bucket bag, and three shoe options. It will also transition nicely into the fall season with a pair of boots and cropped cardigan. First, I’ve styled it with my chocolate kitten heel sandals.

Next, I’ve styled it with my animal print Mary Jane’s. I love that I can wear it with flats.

Then I styled it with my animal print pumps. Although I’ve come down in the height of my heels, I kept two pairs that I can’t part with just yet. I still love these shoes, so I will wear them to sit down events only. Hahaha!

Here, I’ve added my big hat that will be perfect for outdoor events. I can totally see this at a garden tea party with a pair of short gloves, pearl earrings, bracelet, and a brooch.

Both the green & brown dresses are sew elegant. Just wondering if a zipper is really necessary for this dress.
They look as though they could be pulled over your head with ease.
Hi Pam! Thank you so much. Yes, the zipper is definitely necessary. It’s a tight opening to pull over the shoulders.
Just like your other dress, this one is is beautiful! I really like the length on this one too! And of course, I love that brown color! As always, stunning!
Thank you so much, Myra! I love both dresses too. They each have their own elegant flair.
Anita, this dress is stunning!! As usual, your sewing is impeccable; your color choice is perfect; and you wear the dress like a runway model. Thanks for the inspiration. This is another winner.

Green and browns are my colors as well — any earth tone color. I’m a brown lover and did not thinks of using brown until I saw your dress. I am an advanced sewer, but I will watch your event on Youtube. My birthday is August 7th so thank you for the birthday gift (your video). Wishing you many blessings on your special day.
