OVERSIZED JUMPSUIT | MCCALL'S 8288

I used to be a huge jumpsuit fan, but now that I drink 99 ounces to 1 gallon of water daily, I’ve steered away from jumpsuit patterns. That is until I ran across this cute oversized jumpsuit. The loose fit and front closure were the deciding factors for me. An easy to pull on and off, no fuss piece. I used to wonder, “What’s the big deal?” when women would say no to jumpsuits. HA!!! Now I get it. Try drinking a gallon of water a day while wearing a fitted jumpsuit with zipper or buttons in the back, reaching up to your neck. No thank you. Whew! The way I would be dancing in that bathroom, working to get that zipper down, moving like a contortionist. Hahaha! ย Let’s get into the details.

Pattern Information
MCCALL’S 8288 is an oversized jumpsuit. It has a gathered neckline, raglan sleeves, with hook and eye front closure. View A is a sleeveless romper, while the other views include flutter, bell, and three-quarter sleeve variations. There is also a sash included. Here are some closeup photos of the garment.

The pattern is available in print only, and extended sizes, from 8 to 32W.ย

The pattern is rated as AVERAGE an I agree with the rating. However, if you are an advanced beginner with lots of practice under your belt, you may be able to follow the instruction and complete the jumpsuit. This could be a good challenge for you to grow your skill set. Outside of basic sewing skills, you are required to insert a front facing with extension shield to prevent exposing your skin. Since the front is closed by attaching hook and eyes on the edge of the left and right fronts, the shield serves as a cover underneath. If you’re sewing the sleeveless version, you will be using bias tape to finish the armholes.

I found the pattern instructions to be straight forward. When you reach Step #9 to attach the facing to the front and extension, take your time and study the line drawings carefully.

Fabric Information
The pattern envelope suggests Cotton Blends, Linen, and Stable Knits. I used a gorgeous Midweight Crinkle Rayon which worked out perfectly for the jumpsuit. It has a beautiful drape and hangs so nicely. The neutral beige color lends itself to styling with pops of color. I think the jumpsuit would look amazing in a Linen fabric.

I purchased my fabric from Downtown, Los Angeles. The store doesn’t have an online website.

Inside the Garment
I used my Baby Lock Chorus sewing machine and Vibrant Serger to sew the jumpsuit. Let’s take a look at the inside of the garment.

Notions Information
The pattern calls for five hooks and eyes. Also, View A uses one package of 1/2″ wide single fold bias tape to finish the armholes.
Alterations Information
I cut a Size 10 and lengthened the jumpsuit by eight inches for a hem that barely skims the floor so that when I wear it with the sash, it’s not too short for my liking. I made the garment to wear as a casual piece, so I will be wearing it with flats. I sewed a 1 1/4″ double hem.

Styling Options
There are several ways to style the jumpsuit and I love that I can wear it with or without the sash (or other belt). Here I’m styling it with and without the sash, a pair of beige flip flops, brown bucket bag, silver chain with pendant, big silver hoop earrings, silver bracelets, rings and sunglasses. I absolutely love it both ways and plan to wear it a lot. It’s super comfortable and cute. First, let’s see it styled without the sash.

And here it is with the sash. I just love it.

I totally believe you can make any outfit look it’s best on you. I’m totally amazed of how to put it all together. You are my inspiration. Thank you for sharing all of your lovely outfits. Many Blessings Anita.
Virginia!!! Thank you so much for your beautiful and encouraging words. I’m so very pleased with this jumpsuit. ๐
Very nice! My style preference is with the sash/belt. The more I look at it on you, the more I like it. I really love that neckline. It would be just as stunning sleeveless in a semi fitted style, too. Your version sold me into buying this pattern. Thank you for the post, Anita.
I love the neckline too and agree it would be beautiful sleeveless. You will love this pattern. Have fun making your jumpsuit. ๐
Beautiful jumpsuit. Dressed up or down, you wear it well. It doesnโt look complicated to make and looks elegant nonetheless.
Thank you Bee. I agree that it looks very elegant.
Anita, YOU are my inspiration. Thank You. Sincerely, Kim Oliver
Kimberley!!! You make me smile every time. ๐
OMG! You did it again. I love your choice of fabric. I would love to try, and if this one only comes in sizes eight and up, it might be difficult for me to adjust since I’m a beginner sewist. It may be time for a new challenge. I will read through the pattern, but I appreciate any suggestions and recommendations. Thank you for the inspiration.
Hi Mari! Yes, it may be a good challenge. Let me know how it turns out.
Im team jumpsuit. I have many in my wardrobe and quite a few unsewn patterns too. I’m nearing advance beginner in garment sewing . Still learning fit I’m 5’4 bust 491/2 waist 50 1/2 ish hips 64 on a good day so I know tackling this papper pattern along going to be work. However it look fabulous on you and your blog tips has give me the courage to get mine out buy some crikle rayon and sew it up. Thank you.
Yvette, I love your attitude. You’re ready to take the challenge. You could always sew up a muslin to practice first with an old bed sheet. Have fun making your jumpsuit.
Absolutely gorgeous Anita. I prefer it with the sash. You’ve done such a beautiful job as usual. Thank you for the inspiration!
Thank you Ursula! ๐
The jumpsuit looks great on you! I prefer it with the belt, it accentuates your figure. However, you did ask for my opinion and with that being said, I am not a jumpsuit wearer ๐ . Even though this pattern does make it easier with respect to bathroom breaks, one still has to contend with keeping the bodice as well as the pants portion from hitting the floor when using a public restroom and Iโm just not coordinated enough to pull that off!
Yes, Victoria, you’re right. Keeping the garment from touching the public bathroom floor is challenging. I wore the jumpsuit out in public today and I had to be extra to keep it off the floor. ๐คฃ
Once again, Anita, you have hit this one out of the park!!
You make everything look so easy. I love the jumper! Now, I need to see if I can tackle this one?! Enjoy the rest of your beautiful day!
Hi Tracy!!! Yes, give it a try. You can do a practice run by sewing up a muslin with old bed sheets. Have fun making your jumpsuit.
Great job on the jump suit. I made two for my cruise.๐ I used trouser hooks for the closures.
Trouser hooks are a great idea, Edith! Thanks for the tip.
Great Job on the Jumpsuit! Anita, you are an amazing talent and very inspiring. Thank you for sharing.
This looks really cool and comfortable for days when you want to hang loose. I love the tie belt. Initially, I thought it zipped up the front but the little hooks seem to do just fine. Anita, it’s another win!
I thought it zipped up front too until I started gathering my supplies and saw hooks and eyes. I think you could add a zipper instead though.
Thatโs what I was thinking. Any ideas on best way to do that? Iโm a fairly beginner sewer; but Iโm taking big bites๐. I just cannot fathom all the hooks
Absolutely Gorgeous. I stay away from jumpsuit because they either fastened in the back or on the side. This one is exceptional.
Thank you Jacqueline.
I love it, Anita!!! It looks so comfortable
Thank you Anna!
Anita,
You have done a wonderful job on this jumpsuit! I like it best with the sash. It seems a little difficult to sew all those hooks and eyes as neatly as you have. The outfit is gorgeous. I would also like it as a dress.
Thanks for sharing your expertise! Each time, you stretch my skills further.
Thank you so much, Laura. Oh, I think it would look amazing as a dress too.
I love this! Also I too gave up jumpsuits once I committed to 8 glasses of water daily! Though your blog post and beautiful jumpsuit has me thinking of making this one!
Thank you, Allison. I wore the jumpsuit today and had no problems opening the front. The hooks and eyes made it easy.
Like it best with the sash, Anita. Once again, you’re created a beautiful outfit both inside and out! The fabric choice is yummy, too.
Thank you Susan.๐
Anita,
Your work is always exquisite. Thanks for showing us the inside details jusr as much as the outside.
I’m a big fan of jumpsuits I love the way they look on me. If I saw this pattern I would not purchase. But, after seeing it on you I’m ready to get sewing. Great look on you as always.
Yaaay! Have fun making your jumpsuit, Shari! ๐
