My husband and I have this saying when things get really busy around here. “Work hard – Play hard!” So, while we’re busy moving, we’re keeping in mind that we have a little get-away planned, to take place shortly after the move. Sometimes you just have to get away to refresh.

Peasant Dress – McCall’s 6558
I’ve had my eye on this pattern for quite a while, but I haven’t been able to purchase it at the local JoAnn’s Fabric Store because it’s been out of stock. Therefore, when we had business in a different town, I went to two different JoAnn’s stores, looking for this pattern. The second store I found had it in stock, and boy was I happy. I knew I wanted to sew it up with a springy, light weight fabric, so when I saw this gorgeous multi pastel cotton, I thought it would be perfect for this dress.
Have you ever worn an off-the-shoulder top or dress and found yourself constantly pulling at the top to keep it “off the shoulders?” Well, I recently learned about a great tip, in the sewing group, to keep the top off the shoulders. Check it out HERE! I tried it and it really works. Now we can really enjoy wearing our off-the-shoulder tops and dresses without the fuss.

I found your blog by mistake when searching this McCalls pattern review. I’m glad I did. I am a sewists as well and I get inspiration from others. I wanted to ask you, I am self taught so I don’t understand the directions on the fringed ends to this dress. Can you please explain how you did it?
Hi Angela! Are you referring to attaching the ruffle at the bottom of the dress? Yeah, that’s a tricky one.
1) After you have completed steps 12 – 14, draw the seam lines on the bottom of the skirt on the right-side of fabric. This is not in the instructions, but will help with construction.
2) The skirt has 2 seams but the ruffle has 3 seams. You will pin one seam of top edge of ruffle to center back of skirt at bottom edge at the seam line. The center back will be the mid point between the two side seams. Next pin the remaining 2 seams of the ruffle to the 2 side seams of the skirt at the seam line. Pull the basting threads to gather the ruffle and distribute the gathers evenly around. Then pin the ruffle to the skirt at the seam line you traces on the skirt. Stitch, then stitch again 1/4″ inside the seam allowance.
I hope this helps.
Yes this helps a bunch! So fabric will fray but not fall off because of the 2 sewing stitches? I really want to try my hand on this pattern but wanted to know about the fraying so I know which fabric to use. I do have a serger, I wasn’t sure whether to use that since thread for sergers is limited in my area.
Ooooh, I see what you’re asking now! Yes, leave the edges raw if you want the frayed edge look. I left mine raw. If you don’t want the frayed edges, simply hem that top edge of the ruffle before gathering.
Perfect!!! Thanks and I love your twist on this pattern. Great job!!!
Thanks Angela!
Lovely! Beautiful choice of fabric!

Hi Anita,
Another beautiful dress. I really love your style. Be blessed.
Hi Queenie! Thank you so much!
What a beautiful dress! You look absolutely elegant in it too! I also love the way you accessorized it as well…beautiful!
Thanks Myra!
I love everything about this look Ms. Anita! I wish I would’ve had the pleasure to meet you personally at the conference! Maybe next year God willing. I’ve had this pattern for several months and have done the one shoulder blouse. You’ve inspired me to sew the dress now! I was able to get my hands on the exact same fabric you used, but will be using it for another project. I did find the same print in different color hues that I’m going to purchase for this dress though! Everything I’ve seen on your blog I am simply a fan of! Continue to share your talents to bless others…you are a gem!
Regards,
Your newest follower and sister in Christ!
Heeeey Nola! Yes, we MUST meet each other next year at conference. Thank you so much for your kind words. It makes me smile to know you’re enjoying the blog because I’m really having fun doing this. Since you’ve already sewn the top, you know how easy this pattern is to work with. I love an EASY pattern with beautiful fabric. The fabric really does make all the difference. Have a good evening, my sister!
I absolutely love the dress. I cannot wait to purchase the pattern and the fabric is so delightful. You look so lovely as usual. Thank you so much for sharing.
Thanks Ursula! Oh la la! You can apply your gift card to your fabric purchase. Have fun sewing it up!
Anita fantastic as always!!!! I have this pattern – plan to do a lightweight denim. Did you do a pattern review for it? Any challenges for a beginner?
Hi there Sandi! Awesome! I think this will look great in a lightweight denim. I will be doing a pattern review for it shortly on PatternReview.com. It was very easy! Beginner friendly!
Hey Ms. Anita I love that dress it is very pretty and the colors are nice, I just started getting my tools for my sewing projects even through I have watch all the YouTube videos it’s ok I will get there, good news I have been out of work for 2yrs now and now working for a temp agency God is so good they are trying to make me permanent, I thank God everyday for his blessing upon me and I am so glad and thankful that I came across your channel, Ms. Anita thank you just being that sunshine in my day when I really needed it, Thank You. Hopefully I can start sewing some things.
Angela, you have no idea how your comment has encouraged me. I’m so grateful to God for what He has done for you. Congratulations on getting hired with the temp agency! I’m so happy for you right now. I wish I could give you a big hug. I’m also glad that the videos could give you that “sunshine” you needed. We just never know what God will use to help another person. That’s why I say it is so important that we simply use whatever it is He has given us. It all has potential to bless others in some way. I appreciate you sharing your story here with me. Continue to be blessed, my sister, and enjoy your time with the agency. I remember when I worked for a temp agency many years ago. I really enjoyed it because I got to try different positions and meet new people all the time. I couldn’t wait to start a new assignment so I could meet the challenge and show them my skills. Have a great day!
Love the dress and, as always, love how you style it! I have that pattern, but wasn’t sure what fabric to try. Thanks for sharing and good luck on your move.
P.S. Your hats give me life 🙂
Thanks Chrishana! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE hats!
Beautiful dress Anita! Definitely a nice style and floral print that is great for the Summer! I understand about moving and all the stuff that we accumulate. It is amazing isn’t it?! Before you know it, it will be all done, and you’ll be in your new house soon. Have a Blessed day!
Thanks Patricia!
