SOUTHPORT DRESS SEW-ALONG

It’s about that time! Time for another Sew Along Video. This time we’re sewing a beautiful Caftan. If you missed the pattern review I posted to my YouTube channel to prepare you for the Simplicity 8505 | Sew-Along, then you can go check it out HERE

Not only is this Caftan glamorous and stylish, but it’s also very comfortable. I used to think Caftans were old fashioned and more suited for “elderly women”. That was until I made my first one in 2016. There’s a classy elegance about the design and I knew I had to have more, so I made a few from Vogue 1473. Hacking the pattern, I lengthened the dress and eliminated the button closure at the shoulder. Here are the three looks I created with that pattern.

Recently, I’ve started seeing more sew sisters making Simplicity 8505. The first time I saw it, I fell in love and knew I had to have the pattern. I didn’t purchase it right away, but decided to make the move earlier this year when a sew sister posted her version on Instagram. Take a look at some of the beautiful caftans that have been created by others using this Vintage pattern.

My local fabric store didn’t have the pattern in stock at the time, so I went to Walmart, hoping they would have a copy, not really expecting to find it. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I opened the drawer and there was one copy, in my size. Squealing, I grabbed it and went home.

That was months ago. It wasn’t until my friend gifted me this beautiful rayon blend fabric recently that I finally pulled the pattern to sew it. When I laid eyes on the fabric, I knew exactly what I would use it for. It was a perfect marriage. And I’m in LOVE. Just in case you’re wondering, YES, I will be making another one.

Where can I purchase/ source the pattern, without paying a fortune in South African Rands
    EBAY COST me a fortune
    Any suggestions

Oh Yolande, I don’t know. It’s so unfortunate that these patterns are not readily available in some countries.

    Hi,
What level if difficulty would you say this pattern is? I am a brand new sewist.

    1. Anita Morris

I would rate the pattern average, meaning you will need to have some experience before attempting this pattern. I would not recommend it for a new beginner.

Just purchased this pattern! How do you tie the ties? I can’t wrap my head around how it works! 🙂

    1. Anita Morris

Hi Cecilia. You have to actually raise the dress to tie them. Really strange but that’s the only way I can see doing it.

I have the original pattern and made two caftans with it. I actually still wear one. Your YouTube inspires me to pull out the pattern and make another one soon as our hot weather in Arizona cools down. The caftan is very comfortable!!! Glad to see this style coming back!

It’s so comfortable and stylish, Jo! How awesome that you still have the original pattern. Have fun making your next caftan.
