2-PIECE SET | MCCALL'S 8482 & 7472

Let me be the first to tell you that I’m not a trend follower. But when one comes around that I find to fit my personal style, I’m all for it. One trend I’m loving right now is the 2-Piece Set. Oh my GOODNESS! They’re everywhere and I’m ready to sew all the matching coordinates. As I’m rebuilding my wardrobe, separates are crucial in creating maximum versatility. Today’s post is sponsored by BABY LOCK. Let’s get into the details about this gorgeous set.

Pattern Information
Since I’ve recently sewn this same shirt and already shared about it, I will be focusing on the skirt in today’s post. I’ll share close-up photos of the shirt but for all the details SEE THIS POST.
MCCALL’S 8482 comes with a crop top (View A) with short or long puff sleeves, a high neckline with elastic sleeves, waist and neck. View B top comes with a sash. The pattern also includes a pull on asymmetric tiered skirt in two lengths.

The Pattern is available in both PRINT and PDF options, ranging in size from 4 – 20. The company rates the pattern as EASY and I agree. There are no intricate details, just straight seams.

The pattern instructions are straight forward and easy to follow. However, prepare to be patient because it requires LOTS of gathering. I will also recommend labeling your fabric pieces on the skirt after cutting. If you make a mistake and sew a piece in the wrong place, your skirt may look awkward.

Fabric Information
The pattern calls for Challis, Cotton Blends, Gauze, and Lightweight Linen. I used this absolutely gorgeous FLOWER PRINT VISCOSE DEADSTOCK from Core Fabrics. The print and colors ( Cream and Sienna) caught my eye immediately. It’s also available in Cream & Steel Blue. It’s very lightweight making it perfect for summer, and the drape is excellent for all things flowy.

I absolutely love Viscose Fabric from Core Fabrics. At the time of this posting the Floral Print Viscose is still available. As part of my collaboration with Core Fabrics, you can receive 15% off your entire order at CORE FABRICS by using my code (ANITA15) at checkout. Discount does not apply to sale items. I received the fabric, thread, buttons, and interfacing to sew this set in exchange for sharing the project with my community. I also receive a small commission on qualifying purchases. All opinions about the products are my own.

Inside the Garment
I used my Baby Lock Chorus Sewing Machine and Vibrant Serger to sew this set. As an Ambassador for the company, I have several of their machines. I can tell you, with full confidence, that Baby Lock sells high quality products. I’ve been working with their machines since 2017 and there has never been a time when I was disappointed.

If you’re in the market for an upgrade on your sewing machine, check out Baby Lock. You can get 10% off machines, accessories, and software when you use the code SAVE10-AAM4. The offer excludes classes, getaways and Love of Knowledge (BLOK2). Discount is a one-time use per customer account.

Notions Information
McCall’s 8482 calls for thread and elastic only. I used COROZO NUT BUTTONS in Antique Rose, and GÜTERMANN ALL PURPOSE RECYCLED THREAD in Spiced Chocolate (both from Core Fabrics).
Alterations
I wanted my bottom hem a bit longer so that I can wear the skirt with low heels. I meant to add that extra length on the bottom tier, but I forgot during cutting. Therefore, I cut 2 1/2″ strips and sewed them all together until I have one long strip long enough to fit the circumference of the hem. Then I folded the strip in half lengthwise and pressed. I attached the strip to the bottom tier with a 1/2″ seam allowance.

I wanted to sew French Seams throughout the entire shirt. However, when I started inserting the first sleeve, I sewed right sides together then snipped along the curve before I realized what I had done. I couldn’t fix it because of the snips. Therefore, I decided to fold the seam allowance under, creating a hem, and sewed it down. Looks nice and intentional (see photos below).

Styling Options
There are so many styling options for these separates. I’m styling them together here, but definitely planning to wear them with other garments in my wardrobe. The shirt will look amazing with jeans, skirts and slacks. In fact, I just purchased linen fabric in the Sienna color to sew a pair of wide leg pants that I plan to wear with the shirt. I’ll style the skirt with other tops.

Today, I’ve styled the set with simple gold jewelry (hoop earrings, bracelets, ring). Then I finished the look with a pair of chocolate, low-heel sandals, and chocolate bucket purse, and pair of sunglasses. I plan to roll the sleeves up for warm weather, but they look just as nice rolled down. This set can be worn for so many occasions. I’ll be wearing it to church this coming Sunday.

After reading and watching your garment making, I recently decided to follow your website, blog, and YouTube channel. What a fabulous outfit. That Sienna colour shirt can also be worn in the fall. I look forward to reading/viewing your next experience!
Wow! Your eye for pulling patterns together and selecting the ideal fabric is priceless. This outfit is wearable year round. I appreciate your transparency in your sewing process; you keep it real. This is another boss sew, Anita! Thanks for sharing.
I love sets, but it has never occurred to me to do a shirt-dress version! Very inspiring, thank you 🙂
Very nice
Anita, you are a gift to the sewing community. Thank you for the detailed explanation AND the inside pics too! Beautiful work, but what is even more wonderful is how you do such a good job matching your figure to the style of clothing. Inspiring all around!
OH Anita, The 2 piece outfit is beautiful. I especially loved seeing the collar work. You are my classic example of beautiful womanhood. Thank you for sharing this with Me. Sincerely, Kim Oliver
Absolutely lovely!
Omg! Another beautiful ensemble! You pick the best fabrics, Anita! I have been making sets as well! Mostly in linen in prep for summer!
Anita I love that shirt and have ordered the pattern! (Here in the UK. )The outfit looks amazing on you , I can’t wear those types of gathered skirt as they don’t suit me sadly. The fabric is gorgeous . I am in the UK so I do have lots of choices of fabrics but Core Fabrics do some wonderful stuff.
I really enjoy seeing your choices of fabrics to patterns and it helps inspire me . I just wish I had your slender figure ! I cut a size 16-20 these days but i enjoy styling and creating outfits that give me a smooth outline . That’s the joy of making our own made to measure garments .
I’m currently making my 3rd pair of wider leg linen trousers from Simplicity 8848. A great pattern , very flattering over a tummy .
I love this two piece set. Those colors are just my style and I’m sure the fabric is just as nice in the blue . You do such beautiful work and all of your pieces making sure the fabric speaks to you and your garments, they definitely make a statement. Now if I could only get out of my 1 year slump (smh). Keep inspiring us with your beautiful separates and work. May God continue to bless the works of your hands. I’m waiting on your next post.
Another awesome outfit!!! You have a sense of adventure. You have a way of putting fabric print with a sewing pattern and it works every time. Keep going Anita!!
Thank you so much, Monica.💕
Lovely outfit! I think the unintended hem facing will give the skirt a nice drape. Cheers!
Yes, it has a beautiful drape.
Beautiful outfit and great fabric choice. I had the pattern for a while but haven’t made it yet. You have inspired me to make it.
Awesome! Have fun sewing your outfit.
Another classy outfit, Anita. I’m not sure I would have been able to assemble all those layers for the skirt, some diagonal and some horizontal seams. Wow, you sure couldn’t can’t get distracted while sewing those pieces! And I love your solution to lengthening the skirt, making it a feature that just adds to the style of the garment. Beautiful fabric, beautiful notions, beautiful model. Sew on, Sister!
Thank you so much, Susan!
Anita – thank you for another informative dose of courage! You’ve restored my faith in garment sewing again. I was away for many years having fun with quilting, but with a new granddaughter, I’ve been re-inspired to shift back to garments for a while. I’ve been afraid of knits, but gave it a try after your tutorial on the pink leisurewear outfit. There were a few mishaps along the way but I’m pleased with the finished product for myself. The baby clothes are rather easy but I do admit to having never used a serger and didn’t know I needed one. Haha. Now that I’ve made that leap I don’t know how I could live without it! I’m still a little afraid of it, but I’m working through tutorials and gaining confidence. All that to say — thank you for creating this “community.” I’m grateful for you and all that you do to teach, inspire, minister and create.
Oh Wendy! Thank you so much for sharing this with me. I’m so happy to hear that the loungewear tutorial helped you to step out of your comfort zone. And what a joy to sew for your granddaughter. Congratulations on the new serger and I totally understand how you feel about not being able to live without it now. 😂 It’s the absolute best. Thank you for being here. Messages like this really make my heart smile and encourage me to keep going. Have a great weekend.
I absolutely love it! I got the same fabric in the blue. Not totally sure what I am making yet but can’t wait to get it.
Have fun sewing with your Viscose. It’s absolutely amazing.
Anita, I love your sense of fashion. Everything you make from the choice of fabrics to the patterns you choose is beautiful 🤩. And it just works. It’s so exciting when I see you name in my email list. I only have one problem, it’s not often enough (🤣). I know you have a busy life. But I love seeing your posts. They inspire me. Keep doing what you’re doing lady. I love ❤️ it. May God continue to bless you.

Anita! As always you’ve rocked it! I really appreciate that you mention your “unintended” sewing and your solutions. It lets me know it’s ok to be human. Keep going and shift, don’t quit. You are so inspirational. I love your clear, thoughtful instruction, and professional yet warm demeanor. I am blessed by you. Thank you for letting your light shine. God bless you and thank you.
