Halter Maxi Dress – Simplicity 1881

Hello everyone!  I’m feeling super relaxed now.  My husband and I got away for some much needed rest and relaxation.  I’m feeling refreshed and ready to take on whatever awaits me.  One of the many projects I must give attention to is my sewing studio.  I really want to get back to recording more video tutorials, but I have to get my space semi-ready first.  In between decorating and organizing the house and the studio, I’ll be sewing up a few pieces and sharing them with you here on the blog.

Halter Maxi Dress – Simplicity 1881

This is the cute maxi dress I made over a week ago that I mentioned last week in my blog post.  I made it for two occasions.  I wore it to the Hollywood Bowl–Smooth Summer Jazz Festival, and I took it with me to wear one day during our getaway.  This is another easy sew.  I’m so in love with this gorgeous fabric, and it feels great on the body.  I purchased it at Michael Levine Fabrics (link below) during the Mimi G Style Conference in July.  My sew sister, Karen, was standing in front of me in the fabric cutting line and she had this bolt in her arms.  I eyeballed it and asked her to pass it to me when she was done getting her cut.  Then she and I took turns holding each other’s spot in line while we went to look at more fabric (you know, just in case we missed something).  I knew I wanted to make a maxi dress with it, and I’m well pleased with the outcome of this one.  Hmmm… I think I’m starting to really like halters.  Hehehe!

Anita, I adore this dress and it looks spectacular on you!
That dress style is so very classic and the boho print really transfoms it! That fabric is soooo yummy. I love bamboo knit and when I saw it at ML in KNEW I had to have it!! Lol
( thanks for the mention in your post, we sew sisters have to stick together!!??)
Mine has been washed and dried but and sits patiently waiting for me to make a decision! LOL

Love this! Another smashing outfit. Love the fabric. Is the fabric like a rayon batik?

    1. Anita Morris

Thanks Dina! This one is softer and drapes better, in my opinion.

Hi Anita. You look lovely as usual, I have never heard of bamboo knit, but I am certainly willing to give this dandy a try. I love the fit and the way the dress hangs, it looks absolutely fabulous on you. Thank you so much for sharing and I am glad that you and your husband got away after the move.

Heeeyyy Ursula! Thank you so much! I had never heard of bamboo knit either until I saw it that day. I’m so glad I know about it now because I just love it and will definitely use it again.

Anita…your fit on this Halter is sew on point. Can you talk about your process for achieving this in the pattern manipulation phase…thanks:)

    1. Anita Morris

Hi Lora! I didn’t have to make any pattern adjustments. I cut a size 10 instead of the size 14 that is suggested for my bust measurement (36″). Also, I used a smaller piece of elastic than that suggested by the pattern piece. I measured the elastic across my back to accommodate the fit I wanted in that area and used that instead of using the pattern piece to measure. I’ve learned, from experience, how to choose my size based on the style of the garment, the fit I want and the type of fabric being used.
