Denim Jacket & Pants

Happy New Year! I don’t make resolutions, so I move into 2020 with hope that God will continue to heal my heart and open new opportunities.

One thing’s for sure–I will be doing a lot more sewing this year because I’m starting to feel more like myself. There are many gaps in my wardrobe since I purged in December of 2017. I didn’t do a lot of sewing in 2018, so I’m still in need of everything. Hahaha!

Adding separates is a priority and these two pieces are welcome additions. They were the last two items I sewed in 2019. I made them before Christmas and had planned on writing a blog post at that time, but I got all relaxed into the holidays and found myself not wanting to do a photo shoot at all, until now.

DENIM JACKET – SIMPLICITY 8845

I’ve been wanting a white denim jacket for the longest time, so when I saw Mimi wearing one on the cover of her new Simplicity 8845 pattern, I just had to have it. This piece will be in heavy rotation because it’s so very versatile, as you will see in the photos below.

It looks amazing dressed down, of course. However, if you pair it with a lace skirt, lots of pearls, a tank top and a pair of boots—it will take you to church, dinner party, date night, etc. But honey, when you pop that collar—ooohhh baby—YES! Don’t talk to me! Hahaha!!!

I actually made this jacket twice. The first one I made was too big. I judged the ease totally wrong and cut a medium.

When it became obvious that it was gonna be too big, I kept sewing because I didn’t want to waste the fabric. I finished the jacket and will give it away.

I cut a small on the second round and although it’s a better fit, it’s still not as fitted I wanted. I have a RTW blue denim jacket that I love which is a close fit and much shorter in length. I do plan to make another one in the future and will work out fitting at that time.

This pattern is for intermediate level skills and above. If you need assistance sewing the pattern, Norris has a great SEW-ALONG VIDEO you can follow. I found it to be an easy sew as an intermediate sewist, but there were a couple of steps in the pattern instructions that I didn’t understand, so I went to the video and Norris explained it very well.

I LOVE that there are so many sew-alongs on YouTube to assist us when the pattern instructions and line drawings aren’t clear enough. Wouldn’t it be awesome if there was a sew-along for EVERY pattern?

DENIM PANTS – SIMPLICITY 8956

I’m head over hills in love with these pants. The waistline with the notched front waistband and wide legs are what grabbed my attention. Of course pockets are always a bonus. I decided to make a belt instead of the tie.

It’s so funny because I’ve never been a fan of belts until I started making my own recently. Now I want all the belts. Hahaha! I really think it gives the pants a more polished look than the sash would.

This pattern is a very easy sew and I rate it beginner friendly. The styling options for these pants are endless. Because they are fuller on the bottom, I choose to wear them with fitted tops for balance.

If I make these again, I will shorten the length so that I can wear them with flats. I will also roll up the hem on this pair when Spring comes and rock them with flats that way.

I cut a size 14 which is 42″ at the hip, finished. This gave me the perfect amount of ease so that I didn’t have to make any alterations. WINNING!

I used a White Bull Denim that I picked up from Hobby Lobby.

The jacket is so multi-purpose, the pants are so on point, love the combination!

  2. Anne S

Anita yiu look smashing in all of the outfits using the denim jacket and I love the pants. That front detail is so attractive. Do you have a video on fitting your pant patterns?

    1. Anita Morris

Hi Anne! Thank you so much. I’m already getting good use from these pieces. No, I don’t have a video for fitting pants. I was really fortunate with these pants because I didn’t have to make any adjustments other than grading from one size at the waist to a larger one at the hip. I recommend this class by BluPrint for learning how to adjust your patterns for fit.

I love that white outfit – pants and jacket, both of them. I would make a more cream-white color, bright white isn’t very good on me. And beautiful sewing job! I always enjoy your instructive sewing videos, have learned a lot.

    1. Anita Morris

Thank you so much, Betsy! This denim is actually an off-white but you can’t tell in the photos. It sure is difficult to photograph white.

  4. Shelly

I never would have thought of wearing the denim jacket with pearls and lace…you absolutely rocked it!!! I have that pattern and was thinking of making another denim jacket, now I’m thinking I need a white one!!!

    Anita,
    Happy New Year!
Girl, you aced it again! I love the denim jacket. It looks like a difficult project but I may try to tackle it.

The lace skirt outfit is the BOMB! The skirt is one of my favorite pieces you have sewn. Do you have a posting for that? I’m not a lace person but I love that pattern and fit.

I’m so glad you are out of your relaxed mode because I was waiting for your next post! 🙂 You are always such an inspiration!

    Blessings always!

    1. Anita Morris

Hey Yvette! The lace skirt is a treasured piece. It belonged to my Mother-in-Law, who is not deceased. It’s the only think I kept that belonged to her. I’ve had it for many years. I’ve been saying I want to make one. I will one day. Thank you so much. I get so much wear from that skirt.

  14. Heidi

The jacket and lace skirt look fabulous! I also love it with the black and white dress! The sew along sounds like a great help!

    1. Anita Morris

Thank you Heidi! Yes, I love the jacket with the maxi jacket too.

  15. cat

Love that jacket with the lace skirt! You have a wonderful sense of style Anita, alas, that I totally lack!

LOL YES for the video sew alongs being soooo helpful! Girl I just spent almost three days on a Henley placket which the instructions were absolutely NOT helpful. (And I don’t like Henley plackets all THAT much but what was I gonna do I was already into the pattern and the fabric.) Yeah once I did it successfully with the essential help of numerous videos, it’s not that hard — two words — Stay. Stitching. LOL and extra sharp, little scissors. Reminds me when I tried the shawl collar LOL another three days worth of ahem “learning curve” again not that hard once you get it — again Stay. Stitching. LOL

Looking forward to your next project Anita, you keep me inspired. Thanks for all you do!

    1. Anita Morris

Oh my goodness, Cat! You had me laughing as I read your comment. “Stay. Stitching!” One of my least favorite sewing techniques, yet so crucial to the successful sewing. I’m so glad to have you here, Cat. Thank you for visiting my blog.

  16. MISTY BATSON

Heeeyyy Geri! Thank you so much for enjoying my blog. I so glad to be getting back into the swing of things.

  18. Ros Reed

Hi Anita, Happy New Year. Since I don’t wear pants, do you think I could use this pattern to turn the pant to a long skirt. I especially like the top of the skirt. Also, will you do a tutorial on how to make the belt? That jacket is jazzy. May God continue to allow you to help others with your gift.??

  19. Lynnette Braye

    God bless you Mrs. Anita!

  26. pamela Davison

Just lovely – you always know how to put your garments and accessories together. I love the white on you . Unfortunately for me my white would be so dirty and dingy after the first wear I have to stay away from it 🙂

    1. Anita Morris

Pamela, I’m laughing so hard! Hahaha!!! Okay, stay away from the white!

  27. Julia
