SWEATER KNIT MAXI DRESS | MCCALL'S 7122

SWEATER KNIT MAXI DRESS

I love a good fit and flare maxi. So, when Spring tricked me and decided it’s not ready yet, I pulled out some sweater knit from my stash and whipped up this cute maxi dress for church last Sunday. It was perfect for the weather and a welcome addition to my new wardrobe. Let’s get into the details.

Pattern Information

I used MCCALL’S 7122 and was surprised to discover that it’s still in print since it’s a 2015 release. I’ve had this pattern for many years and I’ve only sewn it up once that I can remember. I don’t know why because I absolutely love it.

This pattern is a beginner’s dream. It’s from the McCall’s “Learn to Sew for Fun” pattern line. These patterns are great for those who are new to sewing. In addition to the usual pattern/fabric layout guide and sewing directions, you are given additional information to guide you in the process of learning to sew garments. Below you will find a list of bonus instructions you receive with Learn to Sew Patterns.

If you are new to sewing and interested in learning how to create your own garments, I invite you to take a look at my beginners sewing course called, LEARN TO SEW, Mastering the Basics. I walk you through the entire process of learning how to sew your own garments, step-by-step, with lots of detail. The course was designed with new beginners in mind. You do not need any prior experience to take the course.Β

Fabric Information

The pattern is designed for medium weight moderate stretch knits, such as Cotton Knits, Jerseys and Interlock. I used this beautiful Cable Sweater Knit that I purchased from JoAnn Fabrics last year. I love this fabric so much and purchased a lot of it in different colors. Now that JoAnn’s is closing, I’m glad that I stocked up on this particular fabric to sew more sweater garments later. I’m also planning to make quite a few of these dresses with lightweight knit fabrics for spring and summer.

Inside the Garment

I used my Baby Lock Chorus Sewing Machine for all the seams, Baby Lock Vibrant to finish the seams, and Baby Lock Euphoria to sew the hems. Here are some closeup photos of the inside of the dress.

Notions Information

There are no notions required to sew any of the garments in this pattern. You only need thread.

Make a Belt

I also made a matching belt which I think elevates the entire look. I love making belts with myΒ fashion fabric to match outfits. If you’d like to learn how to make belts to match your garments, I have aΒ YOUTUBE BELT TUTORIALΒ that walks you through the entire process.

Styling Option 1

First, I styled the dress with a pair of silver sandals, lavender crossbody bag, silver chain, bracelets, and hoop earrings. I love this look for lunch dates with my mom, sons, or girlfriends. I would also wear it to run errands around town and meetings where casual attire is appropriate. One thing is for sure, this is a very comfortable dress.

Styling Option 2

Β Next, I dressed it up a bit for church. Here I have it styled with theΒ same sandals, rhinestone earrings, silver bracelets, a silky scarf and rhinestone brooch that says, “Jesus Rules.” To add a pop of color, I’m carrying one of my favorite handbags with red, cream and blue.

Your weather is like mine – a few days of Spring and then a reversion to winter. This dress is perfect for this “roller coaster” weather. The fabric gives warmth; the color is a nod to spring; and
adding the belt took the dress up a notch. I really like the pink purse and the scarf with it. You are in such great shape and this dress fits you perfectly! Don’t rush Spring; you’re looking like a star in the cool weather.

    1. Anita Morris

Oh thank you so much, De! I always love to hear your feedback. Yes, I will just enjoy the cool weather and sew another sweater outfit. πŸ˜‚

You are such a classy lady, and your finish garments always look like they should be on the runway You taught me how to sew like a professional, where my garments look as good on the inside as they do on the outside. I’ve been sewing for many years, always in a rush to finish and not paying attention to details. You taught me patients and taking pride in my finished project. So, thanks and blessing always.

    1. Anita Morris

Oh my goodness! Thank you for sharing this with me, Barbara. I’m so happy to hear about how you’ve allowed yourself to slow down and focus on the details. God bless you.πŸ’•πŸ’•πŸ’•
