BUTTON FRONT BLOUSE | VOGUE 8772

When I put on this ensemble and looked in the mirror, all I could do was smile because it turned out exactly as I had envisioned in my mind. I am head over hills in love with my new outfit. Adding these two pieces to my wardrobe makes me happy. As I continue to rebuild from scratch, the intentionality of curating a wardrobe that reflects my personal style and accommodates my current lifestyle is so empowering. This is the only classic button front blouse I have in my closet right now and it’s a winner. Let’s get into the details.

Blouse Pattern Information
I used VOGUE 8772 to make the button front blouse. The garment is fitted with collar, sleeve and hem variations (narrow), Fisheye darts and French darts. It is currently available on the Simplicity website in paper copy only in sizes 6 – 22. The company rates the pattern as EASY but I will say it depends on your skill level. If you’re a new beginner, I’m not sure this will be an easy project. Even if you’re an advanced beginner, I would only recommend this pattern if you’ve had some experience working with collars, sleeve cuffs, continuous lap on sleeves, and curved hemlines.
Although I didn’t follow the instructions from beginning to end, I did use some parts and they are well written and the illustrations are helpful. If you’re considering sewing the pattern as an Advanced Beginner, I recommend reading through the instructions before getting started to see what skills are necessary.

Let’s take a look at some closeup photos of the button front blouse.

Pants Pattern Information
I used VOGUE 9302 to make View C of the pants. They are semi-fitted with a waistband, pockets, front pleats, center back zipper closure, and length variations. View B uses grosgrain ribbon. The description on the pattern envelope and website both say there is a side zipper closure. This is not the case. The pattern in currently available on the Simplicity website in paper copy only in sizes 6- 22. It is rated as VERY EASY and I agree. If you have basic sewing skills you should be able to complete the project. I did not follow the instructions but they are straight forward and helpful with the illustrations.
Let’s take a closeup look at the details. My pants are too small for my mannequin, so I took flat photos instead.

Fabric Information
I used three different fabrics to make my outfit. They are all from Core Fabrics. I have entered into a paid sponsorship with the company. They allow me to choose fabrics that I like and offer my community a discount. I receive a commission on sales when you use my discount code to purchase your fabrics. The current code (ANITA10) applies to all fabrics on the website, excluding sale items.

When I laid my eyes on the fabric for the blouse, it set the stage for the entire ensemble. I knew immediately that it would become a button front blouse. TheΒ LARGE INKBLOT FLOWER PRINT COTTON POPLINΒ was a perfect choice for a couple of reasons: 1. It has a crisp hand which I knew would work well for this blouse. 2. I love navy and cream together because I think they look rich and sophisticated with classic pieces. Have you ever envisioned an entire outfit by simply looking at a piece of fabric? I do itΒ all the time.
I wanted to choose a fabric for the pants that would compliment the cotton poplin, and linen was the first thing that came to mind. The MIDWEIGHT EUROPEAN LINEN from Core Fabrics was the perfect choice. I don’t usually sew with 100% linen because of how it wrinkles. However, I knew it would yield the classic, high-end look I was seeking. It did not disappoint. Whew! Fabric really does make a huge difference. I’m actually seeing and feeling the difference. It is an honor to have this opportunity to curate quality fabrics for some of my garments. Not only do they look and feel good, but I know they will last a long time.
While the linen doesn’t require a lining, I wanted to add one anyway for a more opaque garment. To further enhance the quality of the pants, I chose the BEMBERG CUPRO LINING. Oh My Word! This was my first time working with this type of lining and it definitely won’t be the last. When I slipped my foot into the pants leg, I literally said, “Ooohhh!” It feels so luxurious against the body. It’s silky, smooth, and drapes like a dream.
I was asked on social media why I was using a cream lining instead of matching navy. Would the blue bleed onto the cream over time? Would the cream affect the color of the navy linen? I chose the cream lining simply because of the color. I love how it matches the cream in the blouse, and again, I love navy and cream together. Nobody will ever see it, but I will, and the insides matter to me. I’m not concerned with color bleed at all. In fact, in the next BEHIND THE SCENES video, I will be showing you exactly how I pre-treated my fabrics to ensure that I don’t get bleeding after the garments are made. Stay tuned because that video will be available on my YOUTUBE CHANNEL tomorrow (8/30/24). The cream lining doesn’t take away from the navy linen on the outside of the pants. Sure, if I had used a navy lining, it would have made the pants even more opaque, but the cream doesn’t change the beauty of the navy.

Notions Information
The blouse requires 1/2″ buttons. The amount depends on which view you are sewing. The pants require a 7″ zipper and one hook and eye closure. View B requires grosgrain ribbon for the side trim. I used a 12″ zipper and altered the length to accommodate the change I made to the waistband.
Alterations Information
I cut a size 8 on the blouse and straightened out the waist curve to give myself a little extra room. I didn’t make this alteration to the pattern. I just drew the new cutting lines onto the fabric after placing the pattern pieces. After trying it on for fit, I wished I had gone up a size for a more loose fit, but after putting everything together, I love it. When I made the pants a few months ago, I left the waistband as is and the finished measurement was approximately 1 1/4″ wide. This time I increased the width of the waistband by adding 1 1/4″ (5/8″ to the top and bottom of front and back waistband pieces). The finished width is approximately 2 1/8″ wide. I also added belt loops to the waistband to accommodate the matching belt I made for the pants.Β

The pants pattern doesn’t come with a lining. To insert a lining, I sewed the front and back pieces together in lining fabric and basted it to the top of the main fabric pants with the wrong sides facing each other. The zipper and pockets were already inserted into the pants. After adding the lining, I attached the waistband and belt loops. Then I hemmed the pants and lining separately.

Update: I have a step by step tutorial on my YouTube channel onΒ How to Make a Self Covered Belt.
Styling Options
I always style my garments before sewing them. It gets me excited when I envision how they will look all put together. Every project begins with me taking the fabrics into my closet to pair them with shoes, handbags, and jewelry. I styled this outfit with a pair of cream colored pumps, 3 silver chains, silver bangles, silver hoop earrings, and a red, blue and cream handbag. The first look is with the blouse collar folded down.

I have this thing about popping collars. It seems to add a bit of drama to the blouse. If you ever put on a blouse and it feels boring, try popping your collar to see if it makes a difference. So, here’s the look after popping the collar. This is how I will wear my blouse most of the time.

What do you think?
Are you a fan of button front blouses? Do you wear your collar folded or popped? I would love to hear your feedback. Scroll to the very bottom of this page to leave a comment.

Beautiful outfit. I know you have sewn jackets. Have you thought about a tailored blazer tutorial and sew along ? I ove your style of instruction and you are so inspiring
Hi Meredith! I have not considered a tailored blazer tutorial. I try to keep the tutorials beginner-friendly for the most part. There may be an occasional advanced beginner or intermediate project, but most are for beginners.
Absolutely beautiful fabric and outfit! I love everything about it! Your topstitching is impeccable!
Thank you so much, Carrie!
I am not British, but your garments looking βSMASHINGβ!!!! Love the blue and cream and the color complement your complexion very well. As always, your garments look awesome!!
Bernice
Well, thank you very much, Bernice!
This is a gorgeous outfit. I would guess that the pants lining also helps weigh down the linen so it smooths out some wrinkles, right?
Thank you Kathy! Yes, I do believe the lining helps with the wrinkles a bit and adds a little more weight to the pants which I like.
Hi Anita, simply beautiful. Where did you get the fabric for the blouse from? I can see that material as a maxi dress!
Rosalind
Hi Rosalind. The fabrics are from Core Fabrics. The links are included in the blog post.
That is GORGEOUS on you. I can’t wait to see the YouTube step by step for both pieces. Especially the pants since I always turn away from doing anything that needs to be lined. π
Ah my first comment was when my iPad had not downloaded the full outfit ! Sorry !
Wow , cupro lining I love this , never heard of it.Iβm wondering if Core Fabrics ship to UK I will look.
So the shirt is poplin? I have made dresses and shirts from poplin and if I hang them well after washing they do not need ironing .
I see you fully lined the trousers. Do you think they work if only 3/4 lined ?
Yes, the shirt is poplin. I’m sure the pants will be fine if you line them 3/4. You can also go without lining if you want.
This looks fabulous and I love the silver accessories I would not have thought to do that but how nice do those long necklaces look ! I have this pattern too and have made a soft floral linen blouse , I love your version , is it view D?
What fabric are your navy trousers ? They look great.
This is such a classic look which works at my time of year too I think. Gorgeous.
The trousers are 100% linen. All the fabric details are mentioned in the blog post.
I love your outfit; It looks go on you.
Thanks for sharing.
Absolutely gorgeous !
Anita, there is only one word for this ensemble – regal! This outfit is so classy and rich looking; you can expect undivided attention when you wear it in public. The blouse print, color scheme, and perfect fitting pants are a gorgeous combination. Your choice of fabrics and impeccable sewing resulted in a refined look. These pieces are so versatile; I can visualize a jacket extending the ensemble as well as coordinating each piece with other items. Thanks for sharing!!
Oh my goodness! Thank you so much, De! You are so right. These pieces are very versatile and will be built upon over time and paired with many other items in my closet.
Such beautiful pieces!!! It’s true that once you try a better quality of fabric, you don’t want to settle for less, and when you consider how much time and work you put into making something using higher quality “ingredients” so you have a longer-lasting garment makes sense – fewer things with higher quality is a good strategy when they’re updated classics like this blouse and pants.
I agree with you 100%. I was looking through fabrics in my collection today and started to feel underwhelmed. π³ I plan to be way more selective when buying fabrics in the future.
I LOVE your outfit and your styling is spot on!!! The button down is my favorite kind of shirt/blouse. I wear the collar both ways depending upon what else Iβm wearing with it. Iβm a G cup and always do a FBA and re-space my buttons. I have this pattern, but havenβt modified it yet. I like that it doesnβt have a yoke. You have inspired me to pull it outπ. Iβm also checking out the linen at Core Fabrics. Thanks for your post.
Hi Karen! It’s a great pattern. Since you like button downs this may be one you sew over and over. The shaping created with the darts is so good. Have fun making your blouse.
Your outfit is beautiful and classy. Love the colours.
Beautiful, classy outfit. I want to sew like you when I grow up!π I have both of these patterns so it is nice to see them come to life in such lovely fabrics. Look forward to your post tomorrow!
This is such a classy outfit. Definitely love both pieces and I have the patternsβ¦..Yay! I do plan to try both of these patterns. I do have a question, what do you use to give your belts stability and where do you order your buckles?
Thank you, Sabrina! I’m so glad you asked about the belt because I forgot to include the link to the step-by-step tutorial on how to make a self covered belt. I’ve updated the post to offer that link. Here is the video that shows all the materials I use to stabilize my belts. https://youtu.be/4pXzoR7PC38?si=iRTqeF-6nRT0iPkrlt.
Anita very well done. Your outfit is smashing, I love the belt which gives the pants a more polished look.
Just beautiful Anitaπ₯°
Anita very well done. Your outfit is smashing, I love the belt which give the finish look more polished.
Beautiful outfit. I love it all.
Anita, I am absolutely in love with this outfit. The fabric for the blouse is everything!
Thank you so much Trish!
You did an amazing job on sewing and styling your outfit! I love the whole ensemble! I hope to one day learn how to make pieces as good as the one’s you make! Thank you for sharing Ms. Anita and I look forward to seeing more!
Elegant, refined and cat walk classy. There is nothing about this outfit that I do not like. The blouse fabric and print are a total winner. I love vogue patterns and find their blouses are always so elegant. Great job all round. I would not even bother with the jewellery as I think the blouse fabric is a statement itself (just my personal choice). You look fabulous.
Thank you so much, Frances.
Absolutely gorgeous! I love the outfit. I prefer button front and definitely popped collar. Those pants are just what I love!!! I need to start sewing again. Darts kill me!
Beautiful outfit!! About the collar, I really like to pop mine. But every time I do, someone comes up behind me and turns it down. I don’t know whether to laugh or growl. Ha
Mollie
ππ€£ππ€£ππ€£ Oh my gosh! People turning down the collar is hilarious! I think I would laugh and tell them I did it on purpose. Too funny!
FABULOUS!!
I absolutely love front button blouses but almost impossible for me to make … I am about a size 10 but a D cup, small shoulders, narrow waist … I’ve given up and only wear knits …
That outfit is fire!!! I love that shirt pattern! Keep it going! I
This is absolutely beautiful
Your outfit is beautiful. Iβm considering making blouses now. I love the photos and the detailing of the garments. The outfit look very professional.
I love your outfit!
I love the outfit
This is a gorgeous outfit. You look fabulous and you did an amazing job. Will love to watch your YouTube. Today I just started a pattern similar to your shirt. Making it for winter so some weight to it. Your shirt fabric is stunning. As for pants, I need so many adjustments that it scares me to line a pair. lol. Like a double whammy.
You look so beautiful in everything you make. God bless you. Be well
ππ€£π Yes, lining pants is a double whammy! π God bless you too, Arlene!
Ms. Anita – that ensemble is fabulous! It’s gorgeous!!!! I’m praying you do a sew along for both the pants & top! And thank you for the discount code!!
You are fabulous! You are a great inspiration! The ensemble is very classy! Kudos to you!
Striking! Love your look!! I can envision that gorgeous blouse with a winter white suit!!
Oh my goodness, Charlene! I can’t wait to wear my blouse with suits. I have fabric for two suits that I want to make soon. One is red and the other is navy. I agree with you that the blouse will look amazing with a white suit. Or even a cream colored suite. Oh my goodness! I can’t wait to make one.π€
Lovely ensemble. The lined linen pants are a thing of beauty. I remember when we could buy lined linen and wool trousers for work. I am sure you can’t any more.
I wonder if the lined linen pants can still be purchased in the high-end stores.
Beautiful!
Hi Anita,
As usual, a beautiful and stunning outfit. It is right up there as one of my favourites of your makes! I never thought anything could come close to that burgundy skirt with the flounce, but this so, so beautiful! I also love navy and cream together and think it always looks classy, clean and timelessly elegant.
I am a beginner and bought this very pattern to try a tie-neck blouse, as it was marked as ‘easy.’ I had a terrible time with it because of the continuous laps but, with perseverance, You-Tube searches and lots of practice on scrap fabric, I eventually managed it and am delighted with the result. You have made me want to make your version so I can pop the collar, which looks fantastic. I love the popped collar look.
The pants are gorgeous and I think you made absolutely the right choice with the cream lining.
Kindest regards,
Jill x
Thank you so much Jill! I’m so happy that your top turned out well. And I’m sure you learned some things while making it. It should be a bit easier sewing it the second time. Have fun making View D.
This is beautiful work, you’re awesome at what you do. Excellent pieces in every way. How much better can you possibly get!! Thanks for sharing and inspiring us.
All of your pieces are beautiful but you knocked this one out of the park. Absolutely gorgeous. The blouse fabric is so beautiful.
Thank you, Wanda! I’m loving this outfit so much.
Anita!
Gorgeous, gorgeous, simply gorgeous! As I anticipated, because, well, it’s you. π
Popped collars are great. I like to wear them both ways. Depends on my mood of the moment. It could change during the wearing day too.
Both pieces are very well constructed and complimentary to the other. Your styling is excellent. I love the insertion of red on the bag/purse.
Oh! And pockets are always great. I also think that the wider waistband and belt complete the look. Polished it. I’m knitting a light weight pullover sweater, in my head. In red, for the cool days. Just thrown over my shoulders and loosely tied. Uh, huh. π
Another good one. Anita. Keep ’em coming. I’m enjoying them all!
~Cornelia
Cornelia!!! Thank you so much for your feedback. You’ve got me over here smiling real big. And I love the idea of your United light weight pullover. Have fun finishing that up.
Wonderful, beautiful, inspiring work – thank you Anita.
Please advise: where did you purchase the fabric(s)?
thank you – Angela
Hi Angela! The links to all the fabrics are included in this blog post.
You look stunning in this outfit. I love it. Beautiful finishing touches!!
Thank you, Fanny! π
Omg, Anita! This whole post is inspirational! I long to make a pair of lined trousers and seeing that the Vogue pattern is easy, Iβm putting in tin my cart NOW!
YES! Tishana, I’ve made these trousers twice and I love both pair. They are so comfortable and versatile. Yes, put the pattern in your cart and have fun making your pants.π€
That is a stunning and classic look Anita! I really have always thought navy blue had such richness to it, and the cream really tops it off. Well done! Thank you for sharing these details with us.
Thank you so much, Jennifer! Yes, YES! Navy looks rich to me also.π€
I absolutely love it! Anything that has a tailored look to it is for me. I am definitely making the blouse (will pick up pattern when it goes on sale). Actually I might not wait for a sale! It just looks so nice Anita! Black and Navy blue are favorites of mine but I am really trying to branch out. Thinking of making that blouse in a nice lightweight denim as well!
Carol, YES! Nothing beats a tailored look. It just speaks elegance. Have fun making your top. It will look beautiful in a lightweight denim.
I notice you use a serger for finishing your garments. Which one do you use the most? Is it the Vibrant or Euphoria?
.
Hi Renia! I use both. They perform different tasks. I use the serger to finish off the seam allowances. The Euphoria is what I use for most of my hems (when I’m not hand sewing the hem). I use the Vibrant the most because I’m always finishing the insides of my garments. But the Euphoria is invaluable to me now that I have it. My machine sewn hems have been drastically elevated.
Hi Anita,
I love your outfit , you did an amazing job.
Iβm a FIT graduate and have made my clothes all
my life. Itβs a great feeling making exactly what you want
and having something no one else has.
Love seeing what you make.
Sincerely, Lorraine
Oh, thank you so much, Lorraine! Wow! Making your clothes all your life! That’s amazing! I’m so grateful to have this skill. Thank you for being here.π
This outfit is Beautiful, Classy, Elegant and Chic all at Once, I Love it!
